Hey, my Mac randomly turned off earlier and is now completely dead.

Anyway to try to test the PSU without the Mac to try to isolate the fault to the PSU or Mac?

Cant give you any advise except be careful, there are likely big capacitors in a psu that hold charge for quite a while :)

I'm not going to open it, bit too risky! Was wondering if there was anyway using a multimeter on the pins or something but the connection doesnt have any exposed pins so I guess not :(

Only on another Mac Mini really. Is there an Apple Store or a reseller anywhere near you?

Apple site says there's one called Micro Computer Consultants in Stoke? They should be happy to plug it into another Mini to test it :)

Just spoke to my mate and he's bringing his PSU to test tomorrow, we're going up stoke later on anyway. Hope there's no damage to the system, it didn't pop and didn't have a nasty smell, is there a chance it could have took the system with it? :/

You should be able to test it with a multimeter, just find out what pins do what first though.

I'd sadly bet on the motherboard though. :(

Tried another PSU, the motherboard is dead. Any ideas how much a replacement will cost for a Dec 2007 model?

Feel a bit ripped off now, only got it Xmas 2007. Only lasted just over 2 years!

Theres an apple repair place in Chesterton staffordshire called SL electrotech, give them a bell matey they are not to far away.

Well motherboards do fail... You didn't get the extended Applecare on it?

Nope, I thought it was covered as I got student discount which gets 3 years for free, but I've only just found out it isn't as I only got the HE discount and not FE. :(

I would check that as the HE discount used to include the 3years coverage for free. It doesn't show up on the warranty checker too often though.

Just checked on the warranty checker and its out of date. The receipt also said it expired Dec 08.

I would call apple mate, HE is usually 3 years and it might just be a problem with their system :)
