AOC G2460PF

Played alien isolation on mine last night. nice and smooth with freesync on a 290x. Way to bright out of the box, so i set brightness to 0 contrast to 25 and game mode off.
One thing that concerns me, it draws 70ish watts under any setting compared to an Asus 24" TN next to it at 20 watts.

Ouch - I'll have to test it on my smart meter tonight and see if I get the same - 70 watts is excessive!

Is your overdrive greyed out / disabled in the OSD when the run the monitor at 144hz?

Thanks Henson - definitely looks like it isn't an isolated problem then.

Any news PCM - have you had a response from AOC yet at all?

I did some more tests last night and took some more photos which I'll post up later.

Using the catalyst control panel to lower the gamma curve between 0.75 and 0.90 seemed to help the image quality a little - not masses but noticeable anyway.

I did the power usage tests and observed a huge difference between 60hz and 144hz...

60hz consumed about 20-30 watts when the monitor was on

144hz consumed over double this at 70 watts!! I don't know if this is the monitor drawing this much or the graphics card which causes it as I don't have another 144hz monitor to compare it with.

It is not an issue specific to this monitor, it is a well known issue affecting all 144Hz monitors. If you do have the issue it would apply to any 144Hz monitor. Simply run it at 120Hz with minimal loss of performance (more so if you don't actually run games at over 120fps) or switch between refresh rates depending on task (desktop or gaming).

Thanks for confirming that - in short, it's a graphics card issue rather than the monitor suddenly sucking down extra juice?

Thanks PCM - we really appreciate your observations and assistance with this.

I can definitely agree with the refresh-dependent gamma - when the monitor first booted at 60hz, it did look OK - upon activating 144hz, the quality took a nose-dive.

I tried the overdrive at 60hz and I agree - a lot of overshoot can be observed (like it wasn't designed for 60hz use).

The ghosting at 144hz (presumably without overdrive) is not terrible but why would we tolerate this when it is being sold as a 1ms gtg screen and the image quality is pretty bad?

I'm going to sit it out until near my 14 days and if there is no sign of an overdrive fix (and possible a serious gamma tweak) in a firmware, I'm afraid this will have to be a return.

Very disappointed - I waited months and scoured for news all over the place frequently for updates; I really thought this would be the AMD equivalent to the G2460PG but unfortunately it is not at the moment :-(

Thanks for the profiles and settings PCM!

Using the profile - those settings has transformed the colour reproduction of the monitor for me! Yes, you can still tell it is a TN panel but the delta of difference vs. an IPS screen is significantly smaller than it was before.

Out of the two profiles (they are both great) my favourite is probably the 2.4 profile with 10 brightness set on the monitor - it's a little too dark for my liking on its own but the 2.2 was a little too bright (so the 2.4 with +10 brightness was about spot on).

Games wise, I tested Diablo 3, Planetside 2, Battlefield:Hardline and Titanfall. The latter three in particular exhitbited excellent improvements in colour.

One issue I did notice is, after exiting Titanfall, the desktop was bright and washed out again - I had to go back to the colour management and re-apply the profile to return it to normal again; is there anyway to stop this?

On another note is there a way you can test the input lag on DisplayPort at 144hz PCM? I think it's pretty good but my aim was a little off last night (over-compensating for my aim which normally occurs with input lag) - it's be great to see a scientific reading rather than my borderline OCD feelings LOL :D

Alright guys. It seems that I'd actually adjusted gamma in the Catalyst Control Centre without realising (oops) and then profiled on top of that. What this means is that my unit doesn't actually have 2.1 gamma (central average) using 'Gamma3' but rather 1.8-1.9. Additionally the profiles are a little messed up, although they will increase the gamma which is important.

Could you guys try another profile for me. It should appear some way between the previous two profiles, but let your eyes adjust and obviously feel free to increase brightness if required. It will hopefully provide good richness to many shades without crushing the low end so much, but I'd like to know what you think - https://pcmonitors.info/icc/AOC G2460PF(new).icm.

Ditto - I'll be trying tonight; thanks again :)

Is there any way DYI way to test input lag or does it require specialist equipment?

I'll try some frame-rate limiting tonight to see if I get the same thing.

Low fps is still low fps - FreeSync won't change this and how it feels by itself but it is meant to help with the associated higher input lag and stuttering that is normally associated with lower fps.

I only got HDMI, DP and VGA cables in the box myself, however, FreeSync only works via DisplayPort anyway so I haven't tested it with any other connection.

Really enjoyable watch and full of really useful information on the monitor. I think you summarised it perfectly at the end really. A good entry into the world of FreeSync and you could do a lot worse for the money. But hopefully that overdrive issue can be resolved, as that would certainly make it easier to recommend. :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the kind comment - that means a lot coming from you! :)

We unfortunately don't have any high-tech gadgets to produce an in-depth technical review but hopefully it is still a useful resource for everyone to watch purely all-subjective view on the on the look and feel of the monitor.

I'm not confident VGA even supports those refresh rates? Anyway, I'm not sure how it is going to play out or the logistics of it, but the issue is going to be addressed. They're sending me an updated model which should give full overdrive control >60Hz. I can't say more about what will happen retrospectively for users that already own the monitor, at this stage.

Well I'd like to hope a free RMA service to replace the faulty units would be in order!

Good news though - I hope an AOC will come here to post their plan soon. If nothing concrete manifests itself within the next week, I'm returning mine within the DSR period; I'm not going to run the risk of a 'maybe' fix.

Can't say I can put my faith in the email process when they want me to test via vga. I said it is rather pointless as vga would never be used. Also overdrive should be useable over display port.. Wish an aoc rep would comment.. If you are getting an updated panel pcm then I reckon we should be sending them back.. Please post your findings.

Yup - I'm being asked to do the same thing and it's totally pointless.

Even if you could do VGA at 144hz and overdrive worked, that still isn't good enough as:

1) VGA sucks - it needs to die and not return

2) I can't use freesync over VGA

They reply with things like this every 2 days to stall for time as I don't believe tech support understand their product or know how to fix it.

I have asked for my case to be escalated to their engineering team asap.

PCM - did you measure an input lag figure for the screen in your review at all? I'm keen to know - I still feel like my aim is a little 'off' - if I had to guess, I think the screen has 10ms of input lag...

hi all,

I can only apologise for the overdrive issue found in our 1st batch shipment of G2460PF, we give you our assurance this will be resolved in the very near future and I will keep you informed.

Thank you AOC, this will definitely put people's minds at rest that this has been recognised as an issue and is looking to be addressed.

Any comment on the FreeSync range actually being 48-144hz rather than the 30-160hz you stated previously?

I ordered this monitor and I got a word from local vendor that when they get it in stock it will be the fixed version, but that might take a while, no schedule given...

Anyways if the overdrive is fixed would you owners recommend this monitor? I would be using it for gaming and movies, I heard the viewing angles are not good, but is that compared to typical TN panels or vs IPS?

Does any one have any word on the input lag? (not talking about response time gray to gray)

Anyways those are my few questions, thanks.

I think the overdrive fix will definitely make up for the monitor's shortcomings by s decent margin.

I have actually decided to return mine as, for me, the issues run deeper than this.

The poor viewing angles are typical of TN panels - this isn't any better or worse.

For me (even with the .ICM profiles) the gamma and 'washed out' look of the screen bugs me too much as well as the lack of colour depth. These, however, can be corrected with the profile and in some scenarios, it looks OK but then you only have to get a game which doesn't play well with the colour profile and it looks horrible again.

This is more of a complaint about TN panels in general al- this is my third and last in recent times and, up there with a 27" screen size, adds to my list of 'never agains' :)

The final nail in the coffin (and this comes with the caveat that I am very sensitive to input lag - annoyingly so) is that the input lag feels a bit too high and puts my aim off slightly.

We aren't taking about a huge number here - I've used both the Asus MG279Q (about 4ms input lag at 144hz), a Dell P2414H (about 5ms input lag) and an Eizo Foris FG2421 (13-16ms of input lag depending on if you use Turbo240 or not) and this is about in the middle (if I had to guess I'd say it was 10ms of lag).

I guess the questions I'd ask myself are:

- Do you have a TN screen and are you ok having the same picture quality of one again?
- Are you very sensitive to input lag?

If the answer is 'yes' to the first question and 'no' to the second - then the monitor is a solid choice after the overdrive fix is applied.

I just ordered one today arriving Tuesday. On webpage said 4 in stock.(from somewhere else)
Hoping everything runs smooth with no problems.

Cool - let us know your thoughts; I hope it is much improved with functioning overdrive.

Unfortunately I've returned mine in favour of getting the BenQ XL2730Z so I can't comment on the improvement.
