Hey guys,

I was just having a chat with my dad about his computer and trying to tell him that it would be a good idea to get rid of the AOL web browser he currently uses and move some something more modern like Chrome.

He's being extremely stubborn hahaha about it.

Anyone give me some things to tell him about how bad the AOL web browser is that will hopefully make him change his mind?

Not a major issue if he doesn't change. It just really annoys me. hahaha.

I ahve tried everything I can think of. Going from why it's bad to stay with the AOL browser and why it would be good to change.

Ask him nicely to try Chrome/Firefox for a week. If he is so stubborn that he won't do this for his son then it's his loss.

Leave it a week then install chrome and point his AOL shortcut to it.

If he asks why it's different just say AOL must have updated the browser.

No, Thats too obvious for him. I ahve tried all sorts of tactics. Tried:

Security issues
Modern browsers have increased performance.
Extra useful features (he's not bothered about them)
Quicker to load up.
Can use tabs
Larger space to browse.
Websites will look better if they use Progressive enhancement

Ah well. It was worth a try. Guess i'll leave it a few more months then try again.

I think i'll need to find a more technical way so maybe somehow disable the AOL browser from working so he has no other option. The thing is that if I did manage to disable the AOL browser then he would figure out that I had done something so if I was to go down this route then I would have to make something else like Internet Explorer also not work. Any ideas?

Experience has told me to leave things like this alone. If it's working, don't disturb the beast.

It sounds really ageist but you could give them a browser that is twice as fast and ten times more secure but if the refresh button isn't green or some equally trivial observation of no actual consequence then you'll never hear the last of it.

Yeh, I suppose so. It's about the 3rd or 4th time I have tried to make him switch but to no avail.

Not a major issue like I said before but would be nice to satisfy my annoying trait to like to have everything up to date

This, when it comes to the lesser technical users change is generally a bad thing... :)

Out of interest, what is stopping you from installing something else and just using it when you are on the PC? Doesnt have to be the main browser does it?

It's his own machine. I have my own machine which I use so it was just trying to make him change browsers but I have given up. HAHAH

Ah ok I understand now.

I had the same conversation with a mate a few months ago, I pulled him away from the AOL browser and placed him on firefox. He has never looked back.

Is he on AOL? If so, then i would get him off that first. Agree with theheyes though. Most older people are happy with what they have. As long as they can browse the internet and they are used to what they have, then it's probably best to just leave them be.

i remember when i had to persuade my mother to stop using aol. took a lot of doing. cant remember how i did it in the end. i think it had something to do with uninstaling it and then mysteriously losing the disk, so she had no other choice but to use IE

Why is that funny?

What is AOL based on? I thought it was just a branded version of IE?

I've always known it to be IE rebranded. As far as I know they still use IE6. So just have a google for the security loop holes in IE6 and explain to him that's technically what he's using with daft icons and voices.

When I explain this to most people, they change pretty quickly.

I'm not sure if it's been updated now, so don't quote me on it. It used to be based on it anyway.
