Aorus Owner's Lounge

Got my X7 Dt yesterday, been playing around with overclocking which I have not bothered with in the past. managed to get a firestrike score of 17717 (graphics 22566 physics 13440 combined 8303) but result have been erratic with up to 1000 difference in scores with identical OC's at different times of day (different programs open in the back ground accounts for some i guess). I did get scores close to the 15000 out of the box which seemed low, so suspect there is some sort of power conflict between the GPU and CPU.

With a couple of tweaks with the undervolting has been handling Ghost Recon Wildlands at 4069 X 2160 with mixture of ultra, very high and high settings, 30-40 FPS (which is fine for me, tend to snipe) and ran for a couple of hours without crashes, max temps GPU 85 CPU81. got all 4 cores locked at 4.2 (although was not the intention to lock them at that speed) and have seen some current throttling in XTU. Initially when trying the Aorus overclocking the graphics overclock had no effect on my firestrike score until I set the CPU to 4.2 and found a stable undervolt. Then changes to the GPU started having an effect.

compared to my X7 V2 the chassis gets no where near as hot, the track pad is a huge improvement and the keyboard has very little flex. The cooling is much more effective than the V2 but would say they make similar noise under load.
Currently the wireless connection is ridiculously slow when plugged in but fine when on battery power (download speeds <1MB/s. I have checked the settings in the power usage menu) but so far no solution. another odd issue is that no internet history is saved, either in IE or firefox, even when opening a new tab you have to write the entire address. settings are remembered though and history should be working (from browsers point of view).

It would have been nice for Aorus to provide a Torx screwdriver with the laptop though, I understand why a Torx would be spec'ed but it is not a size many people will have lying around so I now need to go in search of one. also @Atom80 no bag or keyboard turned up with the laptop :)

I would love an overview of how you have done your under volting as I still can't game on mine with battery. (X5 v6)

Also, on a side note given I never managed to get the system back to ocuk last month and as they now won't let me return it to them I thought I would take a look at the key myself. The two clips that build the scissor were incorrectly clipped together. I rebuilt this and it now works flawlessly. Now if I can sort out the gaming on the go issue then I will have my perfect laptop.

@harry5522
I am probabily not the best person to ask as definatly a 'noob' to overclocking. All i did was follow an undervolting video that someone posted on youtube using intel XTU. started at 0.080V as sore (think it was Derek) post their results with that undervolt then moved up from ther till the system started struggeling. got it stable at 0.13V when running bench marks so stressed it using Ghost Recon Wildlands where after time started getting crashes so backed it of to 0.110V where it ran happily for a couple of hours. I know wildlands is not the most taxing on CPU so plan a test with GTA5 today as think there may be some other things that need tweeking.
I think the system may be power limited but have not found good enough monitoring programs yet to tell exactly what is going on but did see noticable reductions in CPU temps with the undervolt and it seemed to allow the GPU some more room to play.
I have not tried altering the settings for when on battery as it is not a piority for me as it will be rare that i will not be near a power socket however having said that on battery power i get 12MB/s download over my wireless but plugged in i get 700k-4MB/s and have not worked out why that is yet but it is starting to annoy along with the no internet history issue (suspect i need to manually create the folders in the right places for history, book marks etc so will see if that solves the issue when i get the time

Interesting regarding your internet issue, have you updated killer??

I'm actually considering doing a fresh reinstall of windows so I can be certain I've gotten rid of all the problematic bloat ware.

This said the only thing putting me off doing this is the fan/performance profiles in command centen. Its quite a nice setup but I loathe the software.

Also you mentioned no bag turned up, did you order it at the same time as laptop? You won't be disappointed when it arrives it's a great bag! Felt very comfortable carrying the system around along with a heap of other kit for a few hours

I did update Killer software (the version in driver update has a different number to the killer homepage) so not sure if the update has caused the issue. Other than palying with the fan profiles i doubt i will spend much time using the Aorus software, it is useful as a quick start but suspect people will just select the maximum on CPU and GPU in the OC software and assume they are getting best possable performance. When i tried that i got very close to base performance

Hi, I just got my AORUS/X7/DT/V7-CF2 when I was opening the box I could smell an odd burning odour a bit like burning rubber. Now I ignored it and thought it was just the packaging smell.. However as soon as I put the laptop on the smell came from the vents. I continued to use it played various games, updating the OS all worked fine and the temp were going around 46 to 78..

The burning smell is still there coming out the vents. What I would like to know is this normal for this laptop or is there a fault or something. It does get very hot.

Thanks
Paul

Well just installing fresh windows on the x5 v6 as I want to start afresh. (Albeit this time with raid 0 nvme)

Took a few mins for me to remember intels f6 driver packs need extracting before you can boot them. Duuuh.

Going to be picky over what OEM software I do install. If I can get by without killers software I won't put it on at all.

@Atom80 as someone recently asked but didn't apear to get a response I will ask again as I'm also curious. Is there a ram list anywhere for compatibility? I have emailed gskill about this as the part number seems like it's not for sale and I'm sure the current 16gb is behind the motherboard requiring full disassembly to get at to replace (something I'd personally rather avoid if possible though I could re paste cpu and gpu in the process..)

Any advice on ram appreciated as would rather not mix.

Hi Rob_215,

We are currently travelling and are a bit behind on the forum communication due to limited access. Can you please post or remind us of the commitment to "extras" that we made to you. These would need to be arranged separately, so don't worry we will stand by what was sad to you. Please remind / link to the post.

Thanks,

Team AORUS

Thanks for that, appreciate the impartial review.

In unrelated news, are the issues people have with the Killer WiFi cards usually down to crap drivers? I've seen people who have gone as far as whipping the card out and replacing it with an Intel one... is it that bad?

Sometimes antenna but usually drivers. I have an Intel module that I keep and swap from laptop to laptop. It has never failed me.

You can just use Intel XTU to undervolt. Start with a modest -.080V and see what happens. It should help your temps a lot but I don't see how it will help with gaming on battery.

every game and windows are horrible experiences on battery.

EDIT : Windows isn't too bad but it is clearly slower than on battery.

Windows gets a little laggy with Gsync laptops because there's no iGPU. To be brutally honest, the GTX 1070 & 1080 isn't meant to run throttled. But on battery, if not throttled, you'd get 15 minutes of battery life. So you're pretty much stuck with low clock speeds, which translates to a little lower performance.

I hope you're checking if power saving mode is enabled when you unplug. Aorus, by default, has some sort of power profile that forces the laptop into power saver mode every time you unplug. I found it very annoying so I did a fresh install. Needless yo say, you shouldn't be getting 5 fps. Do you have any specifics? Maybe I can try and replicate the issue.

I'm currently on a fresh install of windows was experimenting with what of the OEM software I can get away with ditching. Going to do one more fresh install tomorrow morning and install stuff from lessons learnt.

I am currently on my way to work, I will do a write up and some videos etc tomorrow from the fresh install.

An interesting thing I want to point out is that on battery even with the exact same fam profile or if I whack the fans to 100% xtu reports thermal throttling despite the laptop being very cool. I am starting to think it's tied to that.

When I plug the laptop back in it changes back to normal and says it's not thermally throttling.
