the reddit app used to have these issuiesSo after being on Sync Pro for all this time and now having to uninstall it, I have been instead using the reddit mobile site from Firefox on mobile for my on-the-go reddit browsing. It seems to work fine for the most part, you lose some stuff like push notifications etc.
But tonight I tried the official reddit app, I knew from reading about it that virtually everyone hates it whilst some tolerate it. it has a 2.3 score on the Android app store, and the reviews don't rate it highly either.
Colour me surprised when I log into the app and find it rather usable... There are obvious issues like when zooming on large res images the animation is slightly stuttery, for ref I am on an S23 Ultra so there's no reason why anything should stutter unless it's poorly optimised. Also, you can't pinch zoom on uploaded videos using the internal player - So some slight adjustment to get used but but on the whole the main reddit experience seems to be fine, can search subs, can view fav subs easily, can see messages vs chats from the nav bar, comment structure and usage appears to be fine too. I then made a post on a sub and uploaded 2x images, the post was easy enough and the images uploaded nicely too.
no idea if they have recently updated the app to be better than it was though, but if they have, then it's along the right tracks Id say.
The only annoyance I have really is that no matter what you are browsing, in each sub when scrolling you will see a "reddit business" banner about how you can advertise on reddit, yeah you can just scroll past it, but it's still an annoyance
There's still a ton of ads everywherethe reddit app used to have these issuies
1. videos barely ever played back, so completely pointless to view subreddits with videos.. often used to crash the app
2. it used to kill your battery for example apollo vs reddit for 10 minutes scrolling same subreddits at the same time 10-20% battery difference
3. ads everywhere
how are these issues?

seems like that fixed the video thing then all videos used to load in their own video player and it was junk...1: Yet to find a video post that does not play the video, no issues here. Youtube clips load in the youtube app.
2: nothing to I've noticed yet, but not used it a full day yet so can't say but I'll be able to see battery stats this evening.
3: There are promoted ads/posts when scrolling any given sub, but it's not in your face etc, just an ad card that looks like a post but says "Promoted" by the side of the card header. I just scroll past them so not a major issue, just a thing to mention.
You hate the Reddit app that much that you would rather delete your account?Once it goes pop, which could be any time, i'll delete my account and move to Lemmy
I do like a couple of things that I've not seen in third party apps too:
1: Playing embedded videos, you can click the comments button and read comments with the video pane shrinking to the top of the screen and still visible, keeps things fluid. Clicking back expands the video again to full width.
2: When playing an embedded video from the front page, if it's a video from a cats sub, then when you scroll up on the playing video, you will get other videos with cats or related content. Much like how reels on Instagram works. kinda neat. When you click back on the phone, you go back to the position you were at on the main page.
Its not just about the app, its reddits approach to crush 3rd party apps with virtually no notice. You hate the Reddit app that much that you would rather delete your account?
I had a reddit account which I barely used because I found the official app to be awful. I discovered Apollo and my Reddit usage increased hugely. You hate the Reddit app that much that you would rather delete your account?
No notice? They announced the closure of it 2 months ago lmaoIts not just about the app, its reddits approach to crush 3rd party apps with virtually no notice.
Reddit could easily have made numerous compromises, negotiated in good faith with both developers and its user base, and still made a fair profit. Instead it looked at how well Twitter is going and thought, yeah thats how you do it.
Closing ? Its supposodly still running, but the rates have been set so high as to make it pretty much unworkable and force 3rd party apps off reddit. No notice? They announced the closure of it 2 months ago lmao

I did try the official app again, it was just as bad. I deleted my account(s). I'd rather not bother than have to go back to the official app.
If Apollo comes back with a decent subscription model, I'll sign up again.

2 months ? 2 weeks. In April reddit announced it would be making changes in the future with no detail on pricing or timing , app devs were told it was probably a year away. On 19th June reddit announced it would change on the 1st July. If you think thats a reasonable time line then maybe you should knock off the lmao gas.
Well ok i am not too bothered still.Fake news, not what happened at all. The Reddit owners have lied time and time again, including claiming to have been threatened on a phone call, for which they didn’t realise was recorded, where there were no threats. They are utter cretins.
I've used Revance on Reddit Sync and it's like nothing has changed..
