To be fair the comma and apostrphe is on the same key on my pad and if I don't hold it down long enough I make the same mistake

Not so simple. Originally in English English it was perfectly correct, as the apostrophe indicated that part of the word was missing. Slowly the US view took over, and they do not put an apostrophe there.
