Apple didn't jump on 3G right away, didn't jump on 4G/LTE, didn't jump on a lot of things until they were more established or standardised. NFC is no different.

I was just thinking that. It sounds like a good phone to me, a bit of a shame about NFC but apart from that, all good. Glad they didn't go bigger than 4", I can't stand the tab-phones.
