Has anyone ever managed to either get an apple store to price match or give goods to the value of as way of a discount?

I'm in the market for a new mbp and I can get one online from a particular store for cheaper.....
Just wondering if I'm going to be wasting my time asking.

I thought other stores only sold MBP's for the price apple told them too?

Anyway I doubt they will price match. The closest I got was getting the Birmingham Store to match the Apple online stores full 15% H.E. discount and give me the 3 year applecare package. They don't normally do that for some odd reason.

I didn't think other places usually sold them cheaper, but there's a certain online store which is doing the base 15" model for £150 cheaper. If it was just a few £££ I wouldn't be that bothered, but that's a 10% saving....

Just do it over the phone and tell em you're a student! :p

[This worked for me, as I AM a student, but the guy never asked for any kind of confirmation. As a disclaimer, you probably shouldn't do this! ;)].

Thanks for the replies, nipped in to the Newcastle store today but it was packed (mainly it seems, kids checking their Facebook profiles....).
I might pop in again tomorrow, when it's a bit quieter. No harm in asking if they'll at least chuck a couple of extras in is there? If not, it's buy online or check the refurb store!

I phoned up the Apple online store once to use my Sister's NUS discount to buy a Mac Pro. I simply said I was buying it for her and the woman looked up the University name, then wanted her name and all the details from the card, including numbers, expiry dates etc. She then said that I may be asked in a confirmation e-mail to send a scan or fax of the card, but she said that isn't always the case.

I'm surprised though that they would give anyone a discount by just phoning up and saying they are a student with no proof.

dont think they asked me for anything either . maybe the uni name. nothing they could check up on though.

I used to work for Apple and they can price match. Managers can do it.

Well not any more it seems. He told me last week that they've been told they don't throw freebies in or special deals if people haggle.

Only going by what I've been told, makes sense as apple don't really need to budge for people to buy the product.

Well, I managed to get into the store today.
Spoke to an assistant and explained the situation, she said they don't normally, and would have to check with the manager. She looked online and made sure the spec was identical, then went off and asked him. They went onto another machine elsewhere as she showed him. 2 minutes later, she came back and said yep, all approved!

3 minutes work, £150 saved! Smashing!

Store policy can vary but they're capable of doing it if they want to.
