Apple to replace Intel and move to ARM - *** Confirmed as "Apple Silicon" ***

Rosetta v1 was historically quite good wasn't it? Bit before my 'pro' times - but I suspected R2 wouldn't be bad, and even stuff from the video reviewers showing stuff running it just works for the most part.

Yeah, this is even better than the previous Rosetta. "It just works" is really how you can summarise it apparently. Is it as fast as native? of course not. But do you experience any slowdowns compared to the old Mac you're coming from? Also no. That's all it needed to be.

Massively depended on the application you wanted to use, my memories of Protools (especially plugins) was that it ran like turd under Rosetta although i guess it did a job.

Changing tact, anyone have any good M1 review videos?
Bit disappointed with MKBHD's.

Good video review? You're asking for something that doesn't exist :D

Isn’t the webcam just a symptom of it being built into the lid? Pretty much the same as all thin laptops with a camera in that position. Not enough thickness to put in a decent camera/lens set up unlike something like a surface pro.

Yeah, lid thickness severely limits the options for camera modules, but still, I'm pretty sure they can manage to put in a better one if they tried to :D

Until COVID how often did people even use their webcams? Mine has been used once since 2015 and usually has a sticker on it. If i want good web conferencing footage then it would make more sense to use my A7III via OBS

It's funny that people using phones or tablets always have better video quality on conferences than people using laptops (Apple or otherwise) :D

That's a load of crap at this point. Apparently it's been the same 720p camera for about 7 years. If Apple can design the M1 and focus so hard on camera upgrades for their phones every 12 months, they can figure out how to include a better camera and engineer the chassis to suit.

Its 'crap' because people are comparing it to 4K footage shot on iPhones. It would be complaining that the speakers in the laptops are not as good as the HomePod.

At the end of the day the webcam is a communication tool and it works great for that, I'm not complaining about the quality on Zoom calls. Don't use this to record cinematic footage and you are good. I don't want a thicker lid!

So tempted with the new Macs.

I spent nearly £1500 on a Ryzen 3800X pc a few months ago for my music room. Seriously tempted to ‘upgrade’ it to a M1 Mac Mini and repurpose my Ryzen for work.

Problem is, you'll still spend close to that thanks to Apple charging £200 for every spec bump of RAM and storage. So if you wanted a more meaningful 16GB RAM and 1TB storage then it's up from £699 to £1,299, and that's before buying a new monitor etc (though you may, of course, already have one).

You mean the phones that are about 4x as thick from screen to (protruding) camera over the macbook screen. If they could do it, they would have done it. Its not a conspiracy. If they could fit a better performing webcam into the thickness of the screen why wouldn't they? I assume the only reason they haven't is because they don't want to make the screen thicker to accomodate it. I assume that to make a considerably better camera would require a compromise on screen thickness that they don't think is a good tradeoff.

It would need to make the screen thicker or have a camera bump. The resolution of the sensor is meaningless if the glass in front of it is terrible. It’s just physics at the end of the day.
