Applying for the Police

My mates a copper, i would love to be a policeman myself, but way too much writing, the hours dont even bother me though, just so much paper work, not worth it.

Joining the police force, stress, paper work, going to domestics sorting out why a man broke his wifes jaw.

Its not for the faint hearted.

Then you have the stats chase:rolleyes:

Must stop 5 motorists a day

Must get the stat must get the stat.

Without the stats I'm under performing!:(

Thats an ingenius way to tempt the best people into a job crying out for people with higher than normal inteligence and common sense.

I've always loved the idea of being a detective, I have an incredibly analytical mind and a huge attention to small details and its also something I feel would be a worthy job. However i have absolutely and utterly no interest in being a bobby, at all.

Its quite simple, in any business/service, get the best people in, the business/service does better. The government has always done a fantastic job of scaring off any chance of hiring the best possible people.

Crime's going up and more people get away with things due to bad evidence and the like, you don't have to wonder why really do you.
Yep it does seem pretty crazy doesn't it...

I've always wondered the same thing but they may have some other departments where you can just go straight into it... Computer Forensics maybe?

How do you meet your PDR objectives then?

My PDR objectives are not based on arrests, files submitted etc.

I have always had a good arrest rate, files submitted and a decent detection rate so it has never been highlighted for me to achieve them through PDR objectives.

I usually put a PDR objective as something like wanting a better standard of burglary investigation and measuring this through attachment and feedback from the likes of CSI and CID.

I have never been told that I must achieve x amount of arrests a month or stop x numbers of cars etc.

Meh, I'd love to have been born in America, i think I'd really enjoy being in the FBI, yes you'll get crap assignments and work your way up there too, but you also don't walk around in a uniform being spat on by chav's to start with.

Then maybe buying the x-files boxset the other week and having watched up to series 7 recently has altered my perception of the FBI :p

Theres just no way in hell I'd be a bobby, the people you need to arrest and have power over you don't have, and the people that really aren't doing anything actually wrong, you almost have to hassel. I couldn't spend hours finding catching and banging up a knifing little chav, do hours/days/weeks of work on the case, go to court and watch him walk or get a tiny sentence. It seems like morale crushing job these days where you almost couldn't help but feel you aren't making the slightest bit of difference.

For instance I had found Jamie Bulger's body and then years later seen these little evil ***** get out because they are "fine" now, i'd probably end up killing them or beating the judge that released them to death.

I may be wrong but dont u have to be a copper first before being able to apply to be an FBI agent?

EDIT: Out of pure boredom I checked and no u dont, FBI Special Agent Vacancies for all those interested :p

Do they not do the accelerated promotion scheme any more?

Oh yeah they have that, there's a box you can tick on your application form, IIRC, which opts you in.

I meant there's no preference over people's qualifications when you apply to join the Police. I couldn't tell you anything about the accelerated scheme as I've not heard anything about it since joining, then again I haven't started on borough yet.

Well, just back from the recruitment seminar, had to take a quick 15mins selection test where you have to score 75% or better to recieve an application pack. So will find out in 72 hours if I have been successful..

They explained about the application, although there were 4 questions at the back they said about, where you have 16 paragraphs to explain a past event where you helped someone?

Can anyone who is in the police or has taken an application explain more?

Thanks

Can't really say as they have the whole recruitment tests under 'secrecy' as the questions and challenges can variate. As I've said for your 4 question interview you'll get question based on your past like helping people, working as a team etc. Each question has a number of core competencies you'll need to meet such as respect for race and diversity, resillience, etc.

It should explain it more in your application pack. Forces seem to differ from place to place.
