Aprilia RS125, should I?

Well, id say all rounder, mainly commuting. It will be used to go around 20 miles 5 days a week, and then social riding of an evening / weekend.

You dont want to have to commute on an RS125 m8 - total nightmare, especially if a lot of it is town work.

I will confess, I am a big Aprilia "fanboi". I run an RSV Mille. :)

But if I was a learner and looking to get into biking, an RS125 would not be near the top of my list.

Grab something cheap to learn on, do your CBT, pass your test in however manner who intend to do so ( Direct Access or otherwise ) and move onto something bigger, albeit restricted, to cut your biking teeth on.

I'd rather have a CBR125 than the NSR125 if i was forced to choose. The CBR superceded the NSR but it is a 4Stroke engine rather than 2 Stroke so you get the reliability at the loss of performance. It might be a little hard to get one for 1300 though.

Do it...I used to ride mine 35 miles a day to work during the summer months and god did i ever give it some stick the thing lived at 11000rpm lol..
Think they are due a rebuild every 8000km (check on this though as it was a few years ago since i got rid of mine) which can be expensive..

As for the nsr debate - IMO stay well clear...ok there reliable but they are ******* dull and sloooooowww...

How about a cagiva mito?..Ok not exactly reliable but they do look nice :p

Not a mito, friend had one and had nothing buy problems :P

Again, mechanic friend has recently rebuilt the engine so wont need that doing for a while, and he said hes willing to do it free of charge anyway when it needs it.

what about a restricted ZXR400? if i can get my hands on a decent one

same here. i don't like commuting on the mille! although if i'm late i can get to work 11 miles away in 4 minutes. ;)

but anyway, if you dont have a full or restricted licence then an RS125 is as good as it gets. :)

if you went and did full/restricted licence then i would recommend a GS500 or something. can have fun on them. :)

Definately worthwhile looking at the 400 sports bikes, I've got two, a Honda VFR400 (NC30) and Yamaha FZR400, both are good bikes, the honda is awesome round the corners.

NC30' S are lovely bikes and hold there money really well...Quite fancy one myself...i know there not really desinged for it but whats there top end like?

Another vote for a 400 here.

I run a CBR400RR (NC29) and you can get one for around £1300 if you look around - although their prices do seem to be creeping up again.

I've just spent a grand on it, new suspension set up (ohlins and racetech), braided hoses etc. and it's fantastic...well, it is when it has fairings ;)

Apparantly it'll do 135, I've seen 125 and it wasn't completely out of steam at that point, just close :p

The straight line performance isn't as good as the FZR though, but the cornering is in a completely different league :)

had one from new(2004), rode it for over 10,000 miles, seriously, you couldn't get me off the thing! replaced it with a NC30, and to be honest I had more fun on the 125. And thats no disrespect to the NC30, it was a great bike, and it would do 145ish on the clock, top end no so bad. They dont handle as well as you think until you get the tired old suspension sorted mind, although it does depend if your good enough to notice! The RS125 used to do 107 on the flat with my head on the tank sideways, lol.

Dont believe all the 2stroke unreliable bandwagon, if your prepared to look after them then they are awesome. just dont buy a nail.

you can rebuild it in a day tho if needs be :-) and a cheap nail could be easily sorted... my mate didn't like looking after his as much as I did.

The NC30 however will probably never go wrong, but if it does it is a royal pain in the back side! Spark plugs is a half day job!

A cg125 will be cheap, but it will bore you to tears and people will laugh at you. NSR125 are fugly, and no where near as fast, don't stop anywhere near as well, and don't handle anywhere near as well. the RS in an excellent bike to start you education on, didn't do me any harm :-)

great, an expensive cg125 in an ugly dress! lol One bike the boring NSR probably is better then. Only just mind. The RS is the only proper bike in the class, the rest are toys, apart from the Mito which really is unreliable, and not quite as fast as the RS.

The RS125 is no commuting tool, I'll admit, however, when I was 17 although I was commuting on it, the last thing I wanted was a commuter! the trip to college was never the shortest route!

I was first thinking 'How can you compare the CBR and the CG as the same thing !' but thinking about it i guess you are right :p, however the CBR is water cooled.

And hows the NSR a toy when an RS isnt? they are pretty much exactly the same other than the fact that NSR is now discontinued and weighs more.

I had an NSR125RR which was deristricted with deristriced CDI also, it was awesome ! though i was reccomended to replace the piston every 4000miles Which I did all my self which was pain given my limited tools. and because its a watercooled engine it just makes the process a whole lot more painful...However it can just about be done without taking the engine out which is quite nice.

EDIT
For insurance, i went with Lexham- first year 0y NCB TPO 450
second year 1 yNCB TPO 380
i think it was.

from what i gathered the rs is very fast (105ish...not 120mph), they are also reliable (if they have been looked after, serviced regularly and not thrashed.

if you ride everywhere at 80+mph and dont get the expensive services and rebuilds done it is not reliable (like anything else). unfortunatly the services for the rs125's are needed on a regular basis and are expensive.

basically....if you have the disipline not to rag it all the time and the money to fix it....go for it.

p.s. an engine rebuild on the rs125's inc parts costs around £700+ :(

It would only be £700 if you're a mug and taken for a ride.

Im not gonna go throttle mad, I just want something to **** those chav racers off in their wannabe cars with the stupidly large exhausts on a battered car.
You really need to reassess this childish attitude before you get into biking. Do you think you will **** them off because a motorbike will be faster?

******* off motorists, regardless of age or taste, will only end one way. And you dont have a metal box protecting you.

You havent taken a test, probably never ridden a motorbike, and all you want is as much speed as you can get.

Please star out all swearing - Zefan.

Can't agree more...

Reminds me of a old cartoon in bike magazine years back, was called

'little ronnie ring-ding, he's a throttle happy chappy'

he's sat at lights, thinking 'give it loads!!!!', lots of noise and smoke..annoying everyone.

you then see cut scene of him tearing away, but then can't believe it when he notices a snail overtaking him on inside lane. :D

well, it appealed to me at time as was on TZR125 :), so I could relate to it.

lol im not really gunna be 'giving it loads', and i dont have a childish atitude either, i know the dangers.

I wasnt being serious, i was just irritated by some at the time :)
