Been looking for a new toy, I've read that 360s like to crash quite a bit and suffer from this ring of death thing ?

So do they crash a lot and whats the ring of death ?

Anyone had experience of both the PS3 and 360 ? no fanboy attacks please I just want real comparisions by people who own or have owned them both.

Thinking of getting rid of my gaming rig and getting a console, upgrading every time a new game comes out is a right joke !

I quite like racing sims, Forza 2 or whatevers its called looks pretty good. And I used to love the Grand Turismo series on the PS1-2. Also quite like GTA etc.

Also forgot to add can either be hooked up to my NEC WGX2 20.1 Monitor ? its got DVI + VGA inputs ?

first thing id say is, dont get rid of your gaming rig straight away or at least downgrade a bit? keep both and see how you get on. if your anything like me I find I prefere to play some games on my PC (such as C&C, some FPS's etc) than my 360

I'm on my third 360 but one of them i got replaced for the hey of it when it started giving me disk reading errors while it was still under warranty

The crashing isnt really down to the 360 but more the games and how they've been coded (or how poorly they have as the case is on some games), however the 3 red rings is something different. I think this ones to do with the shoddy solder points on the board that seperate from heating up and cooling down or somethin?

Yes there is a problem here as you read about it all over the net, but think about how many people have bought one and never had the 3 red rings? you dont see them reporting about how their 360 is working fine lol

I'd honestly say get one :) had some of the best gaming time on mine that i've had for a long time, and xbox Live is pretty damn good. IMO the benefits and hours of fun far outweigh the potential problems you MAY gat (i.e. 3 red lights)

Yes just go ahead and get one, if it break take it back and get a new one.

Had mine since Dec and its still going, i keep thinking its going to die on me, it struggles in certain points (like the spinny bit at the start of crackdown when its loading, it pauses) but its not died yet.

I think come the start of december i will order 2 more years warranty though for £60, might as well, although that's about the price of a fix job and you'd get a year's warranty on top of that.

I bought one simply to stream HD media to my telly. Its fantastic and never had a problem.

Ive never played a game on it :D

I'd highly recommend getting a 360. There are plenty of good games out to keep you occupied.

3 rings is a worry for me but it's got the warranty on it for 12 months and not all 360s seem to have died.

You can hook the 360 up to your monitor with the offical VGA cable (the best one too by all accounts).

Phew, it's not just mine then! (bought in dec too).

I've had the dreaded 3 rings of death - 1 month after my warranty ran out. 3 of my friends have also had it. 1 of them is on his 4th 360. They really are excellent consoles but the build quality/reliability is terrible. Gone are the days when you could buy a console and expect it to last years.

yet they shouldnt be that unreliable and them charging £60 for the 2 years extra warranty is just cheeky  they should have increased the warranty further without the extra cost. why should consumers pay because microsoft cut corners in its console design. not only that they still havent changed the consoles design to stop it happening (apparently 2 years isnt long enough)

i know where ya comming from :( its damn criminal!

but since they havnt actually admitted there is a problem (when there blaitently is) their happy to continue to charge us an arm and a leg for repairing an allready faulty product or get you to buy the extra warranty.

even still, knowing about all this still wouldnt put me off buying another one if i had to, maybe it does some people, at the very least from a moral's point of view but to me, it is a fantastic console with by far a better selection of games than the ps3 has currently (only due to it being out a lot longer) for half the price. Though there's no denying it, it has got an inherent problem (i'd love to get some figures here actually, just to see how many have been sold and how many people have actually had the 3 red rings, if anyone could help me out?)

That would be a great idea.

Doubt you'd be able to find the fact through mate.

Worldwide: 10.4 million shipped as of December 31, 2006

United States: 4.5 million consumer sales as of December 31, 2006

Japan: 330,091 consumer sales as of March 4, 2007.

Wiki mind so it could be wrong.

On my 6th one now.

I was going to stop when my 5th broke in February. The Wii was (and still is) keeping me well occupied, but a few weeks ago the lack of good multiplayer games was too much to bear and so I got another.

Fact is, while there are problems (severe ones at that, I'm really disappointed in Microsoft for this), the good times far outweigh the bad.

quoted for truth :D sooooo many good times on burnout with you and your h4x's!!!

Mine is a launch console, never had a problem. Though the failure rate is high, there are still a lot of people out there that have had a good reliable machine. Fingers crossed mine will carry on as it's out of warranty now, lol. ;)

OMG 6 consoles!!!!

That has to be a new record!!

There surely must be something in your usage/positioning/whatever that is exposing the 360's design flaw? I'm not blaming you, the 360 should be able to cope no matter what..

Me, my brother, and mates are all on their first, largely all release day consoles.... not that that excuses anything, being in a temperature controlled environment with nothing around it, I suppose is going to give it the least stress..

Anyway, back OT, owning a PS3/360 the 360 is 'the' games console to get, it's just got too many AAA titles available, there is something for everyone, and at £240 for a premium with games these days, it's just stonking value for money..

As for the warranty, some places are offering 2 extra years for ~£30-£35 which gives peace of mind if the reliability is a worry..

I just sent my 360 off this morning. But I didn't get this dreaded 3 red light error everyone seems to get, I got a 1 red light error and an error message on screen. 360s must break a lot, the UPS guy knew exactly what it was :p

Doesn't really bother me as long as it's still in warranty when it happens.

Yeah, i only paid around £30 for the extra 2 years from a major high street store. Was wondering where people were getting this £60 from? Is that the price if you take out the official MS warrantly?

Unfortunately had to use my warranty too but it took no more than 10 mins from going into the shop to walking out with a brand spanker.

360's don't crash. There may be the odd game that has a bug (Lego StarWars 2 for example) but the 360 itself it pretty robust. They do however seem pretty partial to the odd complete system meltdown (3 red rings).

Saying that, I've had mine 18 months and used it pretty much every day without any problems and I do think the unreliablility card is a little overplayed as I know a lot of people who've still got launch consoles going strong (Nokkon for example).

If they do go wrong the MS service is pretty good (they actually fix your console not just ship you a dodgy replacement these days) and you can also choose an extended warranty or pay for a fix (£80 I think) after your years warranty is up.

I got a 360 at launch as a replacement for PC gaming and I've had the best gaming experience of my life. For racing PGR3, Test Drive Unlimited, Burnout: Revenge and now Forza 2 will provide plenty to keep you happy. GTA IV with 360 exclusive episodic content is out this October and both Crackdown and Saints Row were well received so you have something similar to give you that fix while you wait.

I've nothing against the PS3 other than at the moment I just don't think it a) has the games or b) has the best 07 line up. All I can do is recommend a 360 and at £229.96 at a certain online retailer for 360 premium and WWE Smackdown you really can't go wrong.

PS You can get a seperate VGA cable to connect it to you monitor.
