Are designer labels desirable due to quality or the expense?

As a teenager having the latest a most expensive brand name on your body was all that mattered when going out.
What was the reason for buying these brands? was it due to people knowing they were quite expensive for what they were or was it because you knew you were buying
quality and you could wear it for years to come?

In most cases it was simply marketing telling you and your peer group that it was the "thing to have". Also an expensive item has more psychological impact than a cheaper one. Ironically you want it more if it's expensive, regardless of quality.

Also, do you have a higher than average value vehicle?

I have a monthly bus card don't even have a car...the shame

My own driver who drives me to work i should say huh?
It's the guys wearing North Face these day I don't get tbh. My grand dad has been buying that for decades.

I'm on facebook GAP must have been a big thing?

Bit of both probably. I bought I pair of Armani jeans in the mid 90s because somebody in school usetd to wear all the designer clobber and I was trying to look hip however they lasted for around 6 years after wearing them a lot. So definitely better quality. I'm generally not into that kind of clothing but must have got caught up in the hype back then.

While I've never been one to buy into the whole 'brand name' thing or tried to look cool by wearing them, I have gone back to the same brand (not designer) if it's served me well (ie quality/fits good and/or lasts longer) and in some cases paid a premium for them.

Would I buy designer clothes now, not likely. I do have some more expensive items but they're also things that aren't going to go out of fashion.... mind you I'm at an age where I've determined what my personal style is and style myself based on that, not what is in fashion according to magazines and online 'fashion experts'.

On the contrary, I've had Hugo Boss and Armani underwear that lasts a few monts before the crotch gets a big hole in them, my Calvins on the other hand, last forever!
What gets me though, is brands like Balenciago, that literally put their name on a binmans hi-viz jacket, then charge gullible people about $2000 to buy it!
Their latest one is a pair of shoes that you'd have paid $10 for from a cheap market stall, jazzed them up with some weird heel, now you have the pleasure of paying a grand for them!

I guess as long as there are dumb people that will buy them, they'll keep on making them!

I think it’s down to bullying at schools for the younger generation.

I’ve in recent years started wearing sustainable clothing for daily use as well as outdoor use. It’s more expensive than normal stuff (what that means I’ve no idea) but isn’t ridiculous like some designer brands. They’re worth it to me because I don’t need to replace them so often and they seem to last forever. Plus helping our planet. You notice it more onwhen going on forest walls, hills, fishing etc they at least stand up to brushing up against trees, bushes etc

I do have a 'Montane' wind shirt which at 100 grams and a purchase cost of about £50 was about the most expensive brand item per weight I have ever bought. Most of my clothes are outdoorsey brands or similar but at the cheaper end, Mountain Warehouse etc. As a kid it was Levi jeans, tie dye tees , motorcycle jackets. I was not a dresser.
