Are England unmanageable?

Sven did it.

What we need is the media (papers) to shut up

This. The media is like a cancer in this country, in every aspect they report on, awful stuff!
Easily manageable, just takes someone that will ignore the pressure of the daily rags.

I think a big issue is everyone overrating English players and subsequently having unrealistically high expectations.
This. Our players are mediocre. We are led to believe they are better because their worth to sponsors is far higher than their worth on the pitch. The English football audience is a relatively wealthy audience - compared to Spain, Italy, Brazil. Having an ENglish player promote a product will sell the prodct more effectively than a better foreign player.

The FA, like so many other English Sport governing bodies, are a bunch of twunts out of their depth.

Better youth development, to teach better skills and attitude from an early age, will create a bunch of players who want to play for pride rather than money.

Agree with this. But I also feel press are the worst problem. England win one game they become contenders they lose one they become hated.

Hire me, and you will see how unmanageable they are.

I won a lot on Football Manager. No idea why real life on't be the same.

Srs answer: Obviously not. As a non-England fan, I think England are so over rated its unreal.

From the keeper list, Hart is the only good keeper.

Defence is also not one of the best. The manager should start calling up young players like Walker, Richards, Cahill and Jones. I left Smalling out of that because imo, he is terrible. 'Veterans' like Terry should be included, but not given too much attention, because their best days are over.

Midfield is terrible. Only Young, Wilshere and Rodwell have the potential be on the same level of any other world class midfielder. Gerrard, Lampard etc. are all good, but are all over 30. Lampard will (imo) be too old for the World Cup, therefore, leave space for youths in the Euro.

Attack is also very bad. Apart from Rooney, I can't see any other good player. Defoe, Crouch and Caroll are all huge gambles imo. They are not consistent, and if they are off form in the Euro, England won't go far.

My squad (bold mean starters):

GK:
Hart
The resta re all bad, so its irrelevant

LB:
Cole
Baines

CB:
Cahill
Lescott
Jones
Terry

RB:
Richards
Walker
(MAYBE Johnson, but I would prefer these two).

Midfield:
Wilshere
Lampard
Rodwell
Gerrard
Walcott
Young
Milner
Parker
Chmaberlein

St:
Rooney
Defoe

I would go for a 4-5-1 formation, with Walcott and Young wingers. I got space for around 1 more players.

EDIT: Some may be injured etc. But you got a rought idea of who I would call up/play. I don't 100% follow English footy, but from the games I watch, those are the players who stand out.

I think a big issue is everyone especially the ******* media, overrating English players and subsequently having unrealistically high expectations because the media spend months overhyping everything and whipping everyone into a frenzy then equally gleefully spend months sticking the knife in the manager to get viewers /sell papers after the event.

Fixed.

The job is unmanageable because the media builds up unrealistic expectations which the common sheep in the street believes and then they stir up a frenzy when we fail which the common sheep again follows along blindly.

I already feel sorry for whichever muppet is stupid enough to take the job.

No managing England is Easy.

Managing the expectations of the Fans and Media however is impossible, it seems the bench mark for success is playing in the manner of the great Dutch side of the 70's but also do what they failed and winning a World Cup.

If the fans and media accepted that the quater finals is a good achievment and that our players are too limited to play an expansive continental style game then we would all enjoy it so much more somewhat like our Scotish cousins.

No

My take is that there is too much time spent polishing the crystal chandeliers and not enough making sure the foundations of the house are in good order.

Over the past few years we have had pretty much every kind of manager.

Chest Beating pride and passion from Keegan

Cool Calm and Collected from Sven

Tactical Disciplinarian in Fabio

There is too much pressure. Fans/Media think that Premier League is the best league in the world. Therefore the English players must be the best players in the world. Where in England fail is decision making in key games. No amount of coaching or tactical genius will change that with footballers in their prime.

It's a drum I have beaten to death but until the FA start investing lots more into grassroots across the country then we will not produce world class players. All well and good having a centre of excellence but that is only going to coach the best young kids. What if the best young kids aren't good enough and your not getting enough good young kids. It becomes a bit of a white elephant. You can pay the next England manager £1m, £10m, £100m a year but if what he is working with is not good enough the the foundation will never be strong enough

This is an age old question I have asked many many times in the local and at work. It would seem that the majority of the opininon is that England will never win a major trophy until they stop the 100 miles an hour no techincal skill and the prime atributes of being able to head and run for ever and ever games we currently have (this doesnt sell TV rights to the rest of the world, so its a no go as far as clubs are concerned)

Why is it that we havent won anything for the last 40+ years? it's due to the fact the continent has moved on and play a slow paced game were movement and techincal ablity (one which requires them to be able to pick the right pass when under pressue is paramount) How many times have we seen other teams pressure not only domestic teams for example Man U Barcelona EU Final that we lose the plot and try to hit a 50 yrd ball or lose possesion.

We need to teach respect fo the ball after all it is primarily a very simple game keep possesion and dont give it away. at the same time move all the time dont stand still. I could go on but until we get someone who will have the b to stand up to the FA and start from the roots up we wont get very far no matter who we have. I will give you one example Germany currently have what I feel are at least 2 national sides in that they have an abundance of young talanted players who cannot even get in the national side - can you say that for England ?

However I like everyone else will live in the hope that maybe, just maybe this year we might win (until we get knocked out in the quaters or dont even get past the group stages)

yes they are, cos they think there better than they are.

as already mentioned technique levels etc are behind a number of decent countries, and even some of the not so decent.

until we get a manager that can get them to work as a team we're going no where.

other point would be to actually try out new players in friendlies so when the inevitable injuries/suspensions come we don't have to got into a championship with players who've got no international experience.

I'm not sure the English media are that different to the media anywhere else.

I agree with a lot of what has already been said. There's been talk of writing off the Euros as a chance to try a new young team, which I think is a good idea, but it'll more likely be the next 2 or 3 tournaments. The problem is everyone's obsession with the older established players. For example, all this talk of bringing scholes back. Yes he has been very good and would deserve a place if we actually had a chance of winning, but we don't. What happens next tournament when scholes can't play? People don't seem to think about this and just focus on trying to win now. There's no short term fix and it will take a long time for England to be consistently competing at the top again. The team needs knocking down and rebuilding, not having the cracks papered over.

I don't really expect to see any change though. Ferdinand, Terry, lampard etc will probably still play and we'll scrape through the group with a few draws before going out.

THIS

the truth is that the players at the disposal of any England manager are simply not up to the job. English football is in decline and has been since the gold rush called the premier league came to town.

Domestic clubs are no longer interested in spending time and effort with home grown youth players. The pay cheque at the end of the season if you qualify for champions league football is simply too good for teams to spend time and effort on their own development programmes, so they simply buy success, which unfortunately for English football means bringing in lots of foreign talent that can play straight out of the box with virtually no further development needed.

The media hype England up to be one of the top teams in the world. In my opinion they don't even fit into the top 10.
Every time the Euro or World Cup comes around, a nation still living in 1966 thanks to its media is bitterly disappointed in how they perform. Then proceed to blame it solely on the current manager. Refusing to believe it might have something to do with the players being a bunch of overpaid pre madonna's who can't play outside of club football.
Many of the England current first team should be dropped, bring in new young blood who actually want to play for their country for reasons other than money.

So to answer the question of are they unmanageable, No.
Are they a lost cause until major changes are made? Yes.

Many of the England current first team should be dropped, bring in new young blood who actually want to play for their country for reasons other than money.

i'd agree with you if i thought there were any decent young players that wanted to play for the shirt rather than the money, but i don't think there are.

.

where do you get that young blood form though. Home grown talent is growing pretty thin, and most top flight clubs simply buy in a whole first team ready to roll.

I think the problem lies deep in the roots of youth development in the sport in this country and the fact that it seems to be sub par, mainly due to the ease with which clubs can simply cut a cheque and the next day have some of the best players in the world wearing their colours.

Hodgson is a total wet lettuce! Just like mclaren, boring and uninspiring!! the team needs raw English passion who can inspire the players to build as a family.

Capello couldnt do it as how can a half speaking English Italian inspire a team, other than recomending Italian food while out for dinner

The man for the job should have been Harry!!

I really not sure if Hodgson can bring out the best of England. It just seems to me when players playing for England gives an impression that they dont want to be there at all!

Clubs important then their countries?

But i do believe Harry has the talent to bring out the players and bring home the Euros!
