Are macbooks any good?

Your argument is valid, but for the price of a macbook he can buy a laptop now, and buy another in the future! If he has limitless funds fair enough, but a pc is a much more sensible option. Also, i cant get my head round macs confusing OS. windows or ubuntu for me.

I will agree with that...the OS does look like it would take some getting used to after using Windows for so long.

Price is really an issue, I know the desktop will be the best bet, and in my opinion I have a beast of a rig when at home...but it would be nice to have a backup machine incase my main rig fails, as well as like I said earlier, have a powerful enough machine that when I do my photography out and about I can edit pics on the go.

Reliable?

HA!

I've dropped my MBP from 6ft, there isn't a scratch and then only the HD died, 8 hours later (which then got replaced for free...)

I dropped a Dell £900 PoS and it cracked in half, result = dead.

The equiv dell to my MBP was £300 less with less IMO features, was bigger, weighed more etc etc etc.

Never ever going to buy a PC again (and i've been using both since I was 5, and now im 19...)

In that case, I wonder why tescos own brand stuff hasn't taken over branded items? Because? Worse quality...
I didnt say dell was any good...

I can vouch that OSX takes no time at all to get used to. It's the most simple thing to use day-to-day. The user experience wipes the floor with Windows.

Don't let OSX put you off - it should be one of the top reasons to get a MB.

But its missing a mouse button, the delete key doesnt work, and theres no eject button on the disk drive!

Do love the look and appeal of the Macbooks, and would be nice to use something different than Windows etc...just put off by the price of one.

Have seen an alternative in a local PC named shop, a TOSHIBA Equium U400-145 Laptop
* Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2390
* (1.86 GHz, 533 Mhz, 2MB Cache)
* Genuine Windows Vista Premium
* 2GB memory
* 160GB Hard Drive
* DVD ReWriter Drive
* 13.3" Widescreen display
* Touch sensitive media keys
* Integrated webcam with face recognition
* Stylish black glossy design

Doesnt mean they should complicate things for the sake of being different!

If some wants a better computing experience, there's no doubt that's there will be complications for that person in order to get that experience. Once the complications have disappeared, this person is likely to think back and ponder why they haven't done it earlier :p

I've been there and I'm sure many members in this section have :p

If this person doesn't want to try something different, then it's their loss that they are missing on something that could potentially improve their computing experience :p

I am up for trying new things, thats why I had the initial interest in Apple Macbooks, just curious and I've heard many opinions on whether a Macbook has any benefits compared to a normal laptop

macbook will be quicker than that. will last longer than that, looks better and has the option of running windows and OS X. You can also be re-assured with the fact the newer versions of OS X will run on the current hardware.

but not by default!

Surely having one mouse button is simpler.

But thats to complicated! Weird hand movements!

You are perfectly capable of holding shift for a capital letter. Thats not complicated or a weird hand movement.

I would definitely recommend getting a MacBook. Its worth it for OSX alone. All you people seem to only be concerned with specs. For me its about the whole experience, and imo macs/apple provide the best computing experience, even opening the box is pleasurable!

Exactly. Although I'm not sure about the box opening bit, lol.

I dont know...if I spent that kind of money to get a Macbook and open the box to reveal a brand spanking new shiny Macbook I'd get a semi :D:p

Am very tempted, will have to try and save and put some money aside and get hold of one...but of course telling the gf I picked it up cheap on the bay of the MM :D

And it always comes down to "the experience" with fanboys. Computers are a tool. More often than not, using OSX is an inconvenience. Most OSX users I know dualboot or run Parallells, and struggle to find good native applications that they used to run on Windows. Therefore, OSX fails it as a tool.

Not in my case though, I need a Macbook to run OSX 'legitimately' to have my iPhone applications signed.

Ross, the above 3 arguments must be the weakest excuse to right-off an OS I have ever heard! If those are your three biggest gripes with OSX it amazes me how you can put up with Windows. :o

I don't find using OSX an inconvenience and i dont dual boot or run parallels. I actually think that OSX is a better 'tool' as it allows me to do things quicker and more efficiently.

I'm a Mac owner and I'm sorry to say I'm always running into situations where I need to use Windows. From things ranging from updating the firmware on a mobile phone to logging in to my works VPN.
