Are multi-gpu setups as bad as they used to be?

A little condescending.

Rossi had no end of trouble and tried many a solution to no avail. Why now after he got a 690 and has no more issues is it PEBKAC? It is easy to say "That would have fixed the issue" but you can't guarantee that.

Greg Tommy is not saying Rossi's issues were PEBKAC he was referring to his fix it guide in which he warns people the dangers of doing the fix which involves editing a registry file. I thought Tommy was anything but condescending in what he wrote, if anything he sympathised with the issue he was having, as we all did at the time.

Matt you should get a Latency xFire thread going.

I will don't worry, benchmarks as well. All in good time though. No point doing it now with gimped x16 x4 pci-e 2.0 xfire.

It wasn't written in a condescending manner in the slightest aimed at rossi, matt read it the way it was intended-simply as to why I put the warnings in my thread(again for PEBCAK reasons be it wrecking hardware by pumping too much power or mucking up an OS) on helping with spiking clocks which rossi mentioned.

I could interpret your post as an atempt to cause unneeded friction between myself and rossi, but I'm sure he won't read it that way.;)

I also already explained that some users who have issues go to the other vendor, it's not a one way street-it happens both ways for all sorts of driver/hardware problems.

It is easy to say "That would have fixed the issue" but you can't guarantee that.

If rossi had this symptom:

As no one here and other places with the spiking problem has said it DOESN'T work, then the solution I posted, WOULD have fixed it if applied correctly, but we'll never know now as he doesn't have the cards any more so it's all moot now.

Gregster should know better than that by now, but obviously he doesn't. :(

Clearly boosting is broken on some cards, I had it going a bit mental with one of my cards at one point, but as long as I set the clock speed in excess of the boost speed it's fine.

+1

The GTX 690 is a fantastic card and a far better solution than anything AMD has to offer including the HD 7990. The one thing a GTX 690 does very well is it works straight out of the box, for someone who wants to game this is the most important thing.

When I have dared recommend a GTX 690 in the past, it has attracted a lot of negative comments. The comical thing about it is most of those same people have never been near a GTX 690.

All multi GPU solutions should be like the GTX 690, you take them out the box, plug them in, load drivers and game.

The 690 is one of Nvidia's best cards if you ask me. Forgetting the price nothing offers the same hassle free performance. It is also a superbly put together card and Cooling a pair of 680 cores from a single fan and still remaining quite is pretty amazing.

I think if (as most of you have said) there are no real issues with multi gpu anymore then I'll certainly look to pick up another 680 when the prices drop. I could certainly do with the boost in frames as 3D vision tends to be quite demanding.

What would be the best PSU to go for (in terms of wattage)?

3D is demanding (I love it) and 2x680's will easily cope.

I will leave the PSU spec for someone else, as I am not that great at that.
