Are sn25p's THAT much hassle?

Ive been considering one of these for a while now, after checking the sff-tech forum though it seems these things seem to have no end of problems. Dodgy sata cables, system randomly powering on and off, system posting with all fans blaring and no video display, systems sometimes refusing to power on untill cmos has ben cleared and the video card has been removed and replaced (sometimes that fix doesn't even work) and a whole load more that i can't remember at the minute.

I currently have a Shuttle XPC SS56GV2 as one of my systems and its been flawless, however looking at the literal avalanche of problems over at that forum really made me raise an eyebrow. Are the 25p's That prone to the mass of problems people seem to have with them?

I have had an SN25 for 6 months now. Its used for work and play so has to be very reliable.

I have found the Shuttle to be very good. There are a few minor issues that i have found can catch you out, but solutions are available.

The biggest issue i suffer is that if the unit crashes or i use the reset button, the SN25 does not detect my USB devices on re-boot. A real problem with USB keyboard. It's a pain, but i have to turn the unit off via the PSU switch and pull out the power cord for a few seconds. Then It powers back without issue. This seems fairly widespread, but may be due to any one of my components.

Dont let this put you off. This issue only really becomes a real bind if playing with overclocking and pushing to the limit.

Fan control is excellent and the unit runs very cool and quiet.

My spec: SN25P + AMD 4400X2 + 2GB Gskill + X1800XT 512MB + 2 x Hitachi 250GB HD's in Raid 0 + Razer Diamondback mouse and Saitek USB keyboard.

The only thing I find is that sometimes if you do a reboot the raid array isn't detected, I think its a heat thing and will probably be fixed with newer bios/drivers.

Did you have to take the duct out of the system so the x1800 could fit? Seems to be some people are saying it has to be taken out, others are saying if you fit the graphics card before the duct then the duct will slide in and not flex the card back.

Got mine today after a small mishap with my main system. Its great and MUCH MUCH more quiet than my other system (this is near silent).

The USB keyboard thing caught me out, and after banging my head against a wall for hours, i just about an hour ago got it working. Saved me a trip back up to ocuk tomorrow anyway :D

now i know how to fix it, it wont be a problem.

But so far, apart from that, and while installing windows it took about 5 mins on the installing devices bit (thought it had crashed at one stage but it was just taking its time) but im enjoying it so far. Im pleased to say this shuttle isnt like the previous shuttles ive had nightmares with (although my dvd-rw remains just plonked in the case because it was becoming a sod to install!)

I have the sn26p which is almost the same as the sn25p apart was having SLI support and 92mm exhaust fan(80mm on sn25p).

I had no problems with mine..These new shuttle P cases are 10x better for heat, noise and working then the shuttle G5 range cases.

I never go back to G5 shuttle now.

Yes and i have not found any increase in heat from doing so.

Id say same as above tho I dont find the build quality too bad - have a moderately decent machine in mine and it runs most things very well - not fully everything on + full bells and whistles but im happy with it at the minute and it will handle a couple of good upgrades when the time comes that im not :) (X1800/7800 + some form of dual core)

By the time I read about the SATA cable problems my SN25P was already built and running. I bought replacement cables but still haven't fitted them - never had a problems with the original ones so I guess I'm one of the lucky few.

Mine was amazing after I had changed the SATA cables...

Run the latest BIOS and Windows x64 if you want a lightning machine! :D

Im now on a SN26P which is essentially the same, though I have had both.

FYI: Shuttle have started replacing newer units with better SATA cables at the factory, so it's possible the later batches will get less/less "poor" cables.. you probably got one of the batches they'd replaced :)

My SN25p has inexplicably died after just 5days :( In the latter stages of full testing to ensure the shuttle is to blame and not another component but its looking like its to blame :( Seemed like a nice system while it worked!

Unlikely that I got one of the later batch as I had mine on preorder before they were released :)

Yes, but they knew about this problem from the US sales and whatnot.. they probably started changing the systems before they shipped to the UK ;)
