The reason I ask is, cos I might upgrade my s939 board, cpu, and mem at the end of this year or the beginning of next.. I know what your saying "go intel" right? But do I need all that cpu power, not for crysis anyway, and its a cheap change over.

Basically if I went am2, how memy yrs to come could I upgrade the cpu on it?

Wait for the Am2+ boards if you're going AMD, the Am2 boards will work with the newer cpus with a bios update but lack the funtime Am2+ features.

Who knows. I think AMD messed up my ditching s939. Not so long ago a64 s939 was king and to buy any other would have been silly. I dont think AM2 was a worthy upgrade from 939 for most users and thats one of the reasons why so many people went to core2duo. Killing off s939 was almost as bad as killing off AGP.

Also will am2 boards like the Asus M2N32-SLi Deluxe board support the latest cpu (Phenom cpus and anything else amd brings out) Cos that board does look nice, but does it perform as good as it looks?

Has anyone got this board, if so, Will I be able to fit a "Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro V2" or is the heatpipe in the way?

The main reason I want to upgrade is so I can have 4gb of mem, cos the s939 performs badly filling all 4 mem slots up.

They had to really, changing from DDR to DDR2 changed the structure of the CPU as the memory controller had to be replaced, and as a result the number of pins had to change too.

If they'd have stayed on DDR or not had the memory controller onboard I think AMD would have stayed on socket 939.

Well i know a lot of the time s939 forces ddr333 speeds on ddr400 ram when 4 sticks are used. You can sometimes get around this. If you were thinking of buying memory, i would go with a ddr2 setup just because of the memory costs alone. ddr1 isn't cheap! I know AM2 is better, i just think its a lot to ask of people to upgrade their motherboard, memory and CPU in relation to how much performance gain they will achieve. I just think s939 was a huge platform for AMD and its a shame they just cut everyone off from upgrading within it. I.E. not running them side by side for a while. A s939 x2 +4800 sells for £150+++ because they are no longer in production. My point is, it's just a shame that AMD gave their userbase a £/performance brickwall when it came to upgrading and therefore making them look elsewhere.

I would say just wait a little longer, and see what AMDs quads are like, when they are released.

Your in the same boat Im in. Can you not clock the Opty 185 any more.

I would say upgrade the 1900 you will see an improvement.

ATM I am broke cant even afford to upgrade my x1900xt. I would oc my opty 185 more but the temps are rubbish on this cpu. The cpu isnt slowing things down at all at the moment cos crysis the latest game only uses 80% max of the cpu.

The only thing my sys struggles with is dirt, but I think something is conflicting somewhere cos with 6 -10 car races its smooth and chuggy, cant make up its mind, if that makes sense??

AMD promised that k10 would fit into AM2. As they knew themselves that the move was stupid and pointless.

Though you have to give them praise for the fact that if AMD didnt move to ddr2 ram then the prices wouldnt be soo low.

They said the same about the Socket F Opterons from dual to quad and it is not true on all motherboards. I hope its different for AM2 and AM2+, but don't hold your breath. I think it will grate on all those who have held off going intel until they have seen what the Phenoms bring if there is no backward compatibility.

My last intel was a Pentium 100MHz, so I am a long time AMD supporter but recently AMD have being saying lots and delivering little.

I'm glad I ran the ASRock dual sata s939 board, for £15 they offer an AM2 riser that takes AM2 and DDR2 with no performance hit over replacing the whole motherboard.

Also factor in that this board cost pennies when new and heavily overclocks whilst being very stable and your (I'm) laughing.

For £100 I can upgrade to AM2 and DDR2 going from a single core Opty to a dual core X2 in effect potentially doubling my performance. (especially in bloody benchmarks)

In fact, it's highly likely a BIOS rev will allow Phenom to run on this s939 board too. I don't understand why other board manufacturers didn't offer this affordable add-on.

Damn right, I loved that board, 40% stable OC and agp/pci-e for £40.

Wish I found somewhere that sold the AM2 card now....

There are several places in the UK that do, but judging by your signature it would appear you've already made the jump.

I love the fact that this 'ageing' S939 board will be able to span three generations/revisions of socket and still maintain modern features and performance.

As you say, for a £35-40 mobo, incredible work by ASRock and the chipset manufacturer ULi - lest we forget it also supports both AGP and PCI-e! :)

Might be able to afford this in 2weeks, but should I wait incase the Phenom cpus dont support the board? Will a "Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro V2" fit,or will the heatpipe be in the way? Also will any mem slots be blocked with the cooler?

= contradiction :p + you could get a quad core intel for the same price
