Are socket AM2 comming to the end any time soon??

You're really driving costs up for mid-range performance.
There's no reason at all to buy AMD right now, the options are pretty much, buy a core2 now or wait until Phenom comes out and weigh up the options then.

The Corsair memory is more expensive and that motherboard is way overpriced for what it is. 2nd hand for about £60 or avoid tbh, it's getting on a bit, great for AM2 systems but only wise if you've got a decent AM2 chip already.
The 6400 Black Edition is just too expensive, 6000 or 5000 Black Edition are probably the choice AMD's of the moment.

When you say it'll be a cheap changeover, I don't understand what you mean. It'll be equally or more expensive than a change to Intel unless you're buying used.

The price of the Geil cant be beat for budget buying, and the Crucial is the best stuff for overclocking atm.

Corsair ATM is trading on past triumphs, as it's still overpriced (though less that it used to be), the Domminator stuff is nowhere near worth what they charge for it and cant compete with other brands for overclocking. Point in fact that the Crucial 1066Mhz stuff is almost the cheapest that OCuk sell (other than their generic stuff) and is pretty much THE best overclocking DDR2.

Like a few months ago I upgraded from 1gb to 2gb of corsair 3500LL pro ddr mem, with the leds, costing £160. Spent loads on this dam pc theses last few months

Dude, just get Intel :)

If going dualcore go: Intel E2180 M0(overclock to 3.2Ghz)
If going quadcore go: Intel Q6600 G0
Go for the GeiL PC6400 ULL

Please don't go near AMD at the moment or indeed wait for Phenom (and tbh it's probably not going to be great anyway).

Damn right, I loved that board, 40% stable OC and agp/pci-e for £40.

Wish I found somewhere that sold the AM2 card now....

wow reading this thread was great help been wondering why my old rig worked with neally every game ! smoothly... (all low settings ofcourse)

it was

Asrock 939 sata motherboard
1gig ddr400 ram
Dual core 4200+ AMD
250gb maxtor
6200 turbocache

Strange i would be able to play many games smoother (meaning not higher detail but smoother performance when we were at the same settings) than some of my friends who had say 1950 radeon cards and 7600gt card..and even 7950gx2..and they had 2 gig of ram....and i used to load up quicker than all of them in online gaming !

only problem i ever had with it was when i pumped the graphics up to the highest res LOL! which niether my screen or card was capable of doing haha so it had to be sent away.......for some reason it was TOTALLY VIRUS proof in the 4 years i had it meaning, i never had a single virus in 3 years of online gaming and internet searching (in consideration im online about 8 hours a day)....and i didnt have 1 piece of anti virus software on it... :/ it was the gladiator of computers :D

was allways amazed at the little begga ;)

sadly the motherboard finally gave up last week :(

R.I.P

Socket AM2 still stay on as it work on AM2 and AM2+ to use either CPU or motherboard - yuo can use AM2+ CPU into AM2 motheboard or other way but remember AM2+ only HTT 3.0 support with DDR2-1066 as AM2 only DDR-800 and AM3 is coming after Xmas and then next new Socket due by 2009/2010... Im stick with my AM2 just now until few years time.

Im getting really p*** with my system, feel like putting a hammer right thought the darn thing. Sincehaving my opty 185,, winxp just reboots when torrent download like over 50k/sec or something like that. Ive tried diff torrent progs but xp still reboot.. Also it reboots with the g15 keyboard software when it loads,, but ive sorted that by delaying the keyboard software from booting up for 25secs.

Ive just gone bak to vista cos I have no probs with random reboots, But Ive just tried crysis with vista, and the performance is much worse then xp, and ive pre ordered crysis.

So basically I cant win whatever I do, and Im really getting fed up with reinstalling windows all the time to try to fix my probs, so Ive basically given up with my sys, and Im going to see if I can borrow £300 to get a system that actually works. What do you think of this

Im thinking about degrading the cpu to a 3ghz, then overclocking it to 3.2ghz, to save a bit of money.

Is that memory any good at overclocking?

Edit :Also whats the diff between the M2N-SLi Deluxe and M2N32-SLi Deluxe boards? because apparntly the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro cooler dont fit too well on the M2N32-SLi Deluxe

as has already been said you' be silly not to go with intel, either a nice cheap e2180 and overclock it or a quadcore and any of the decent P35 boards, the ram you already picked should be fine although i have the non dhx 5-5-5-18 stuff and it runs at stock volts at 4-4-4-12

to go with amd at this time would be wasting money, much more performance per £££ on intel and less issues i find aswell

I've always felt that AM2 was forced upon us & on AMD too!

I'm waiting for the first Phenom chips to drop this month. AM2+ mobos are already on their way too. IMO the M2N32-SLi Deluxe would be a waste considering what the newer AM2+ mobos will bring to the table, i.e. PCI-E 2.0, HTT 3.0, ATI CrossFireX support, etc.

Ok spec my a cpu, good overclockable motherboard and memory for £300 or less if poss, I got the amd sys down to £230. Remember I can upgrade the cpu for a better 1 later, I just want a system that works??

a quick spec i'd say

e2180 @ £55 - will easily hit 3Ghz probably on stock volts
Thermalright Ultra-120A @ £26
Gigabyte GA P35C-DS3R @ £72
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 @ £35
+ £20 for a fan / delivery

Total = £210

So my mobo will support those new phenfon chips then? Is the AM2+ the new socket type and my mobo will support it?
