Are there any gaming sites that you avoid?

I'm thinking of subscribing to the print version of PC Gamer for some gamer news. I enjoy reading magazines from time to time and it might as well be one about one of my big hobbies.

Neogaf, they only want one two type's of people that everyone else hates and it's explicitly niche.

Beta-cuckolds and Feminazis.

/may or may not be serious, but it's a **** hole certainly.

Thats a good point. But I do find that Kotaku and Polygon have to many duff articles for my liking.

Another thing that I like to do regardless of site. I like to read through the article to find others opinions on it. In a lot of cases the comments are more informative or correct than the article it's self. Here's a good example of a less informative article posted on PC Gamer.

Kotaku is just a glorified blog with very little editorial control, and doesn't really pretend to be anything else. There's a lot of fluff and a very wide range of quality and opinion on there, as long as you view it as such it's fine.

Polygon is generally pretty good. Opinion pieces are generally labelled as such. I know there are people that get upset by voluntarily reading 'political' posts but my interest in games extends beyond just a hobby so more in depth analysis of the social and political context around and in games is interesting to me.

Edge is always a good read, usually pick up a print copy if I'm in the UK.

I just read user views to get the typical gist (ignoring the 10/10 fanboy and 1/10 hater extremes that can often plague them). Never read so called 'professional' game critics. In the end it's just the opinion of one person that somehow holds more weight because of their status that could be biased or bribed. Ultimately I will just decided for myself from videos and other preview media. There's been games that people said were great that I've hated and the ones that are bad but I've liked.

This. A bit of common sense (is this the type of game I would like) and a glance at the metacritic score to get a general idea is about the extent of my interest in reviews.

I tend to just read up on the game developers/publishers, watch a brief gameplay video and decide for myself. Sometimes I usually I might come across the game on sites like Kotaku, Polygon and a few others and skim read.

I won't watch ******* youtubers, they're usually the worst, a shower of ***** one might say.

I used to read Gamespot back in the day (early 2000s) but soon got fed up with their shady reviews and then the whole Jeff Gerstmann fiasco was a joke.

I don't really watch any reviews and tend to check out user reviews on Steam and forums etc.

Pretty much this. If user reviews on Steam are good then I watch some videos/ read about the game bit more and at the end don't buy it anyway. :) Got plenty of games on that I want to play so trying not to buy anymore games for now.

I normally go by gameplay videos and how a game looks. The only indication I use are the Steam ratings. If it's positive and above, I'm more drawn to checking the game out. I don't read reviews on anything though.

I do read the odd review but always take user reviews from either Steam or Metacritic with a pinch of salt. Most of the time the game is either complete crap or amazing and often an a small detail get's blown out of proportion and the review becomes negative regarding a tiny detail.

I regularly read Rock, Paper, Shotgun - I like it's breadth (covers lots of cool indie titles, as well as the AAAs (though I don't tend to play AAAs, I quite like to read about them)).

If I want to read about console stuff, I'll head over to Eurogamer.

Neither of those use review scores, it's worth noting.

I also read the Jimquisition, from time to time. But I consider Jim Stirling to be more of a gaming entertainer than straight-up critic. And he's a one-man show, so you get limited coverage.

I wouldn't read Gamespot, IGN, Polygon etc as I don't find them entertaining nor do I place much truck on their opinions.

I still buy PC gamer each month for bog reading material. It's fairly decent and helps keep an eye on the upcoming games. Their reviews are a bit skewed. But ultimately, it's a good rag. Not sure on their site though.
