Are there good and bad TRV's?

They're good for the money you pay. Go for the liquid sensor ones. Screwfix ones are OK, I have a few in my house and not had a problem with them. I find the best thing to do is periodically spray a bit of WD40 into the pins.

Glad i saw this thread, its on my jobs list to swap out 6 radiator valves and flush the system out. Currently got the old manual valves still on throughout the house.

Debated a programmable trv for a couple of rooms but unsure if theyre worth it right now.

Another vote for TRV4s which I've had on two systems now. Reliable and same thread size as several electronic TRVs heads such as evohome (no ugly adapter required).

The top part also comes in all chrome, white body/chrome knob and all white options if you're going for a specific rad/pipe/valve look.

The homes we've had with cheap TRVs had various issues with leaks, sticking and vibration even though fitted to flow side.

I sell Bathrooms & Heating products and whilst Drayton are good you're just paying for the name similar to buying a Roca toilet etc. So long as whatever you buy uses a liquid sensor rather than wax you're fine. You can get TRV's that look exactly the same as TRV4's for less than £10, which when you're replacing many will add up.

Are they completely identical to TRV4s, or just visually? I found a couple of lookalikes from the selection of TRVs I bought to review for my new heating system, but when I examined them they had different internals and obviously inferior.

I ended up with some Peggler Terrier's, picked them up from Ebay for £6 a pop. Working well so far this winter.

What's the advantage of a liquid one versus wax? Asking as I'm sure my plumber has recently put in the cheapest crap going! :X

Sadly, these have been discontinued. the more modern equivalents seem to be stupidly (Insanely really) expensive,, :(

They are still available on the bay etc but get them while they are hot. (I have bought a load because I wish to install some additional radiators and I also want some spares for the future)

According to Peglar they have been discontinued owing to poor sales . Well yes, YOU NEVER BLOODY ADVERTISED THEM YOU ******* IDIOTS!

(I really hate it when manufacturers manage to end up end up killing a really really good product because of this sort of stupidity, I really do... See also-Comfort "Fast Dry". Yes they advertised that, but they didn't tell people how it actually worked. so most people used it wrong and didn't think it made any difference, which it really did! )

I have used these TRV's for many years and I really like them, the only down side is that they are a bit noisy when they do their thing so if you are a light sleeper they may not be suitable for bedrooms. (Also, you need to change the batteries every year, not every two years)

Peglar still sells (For now, but you have to do deep search to find it) the USB dongle that allows one to program then from a PC but they no longer have the website that allows you to DL the software.

(This is a really useful feature)

The unit with the actual radiator valve seem to be almost unobtainable now, but you can still find people selling New-Old stock TRV heads.

If you want to use these, Do not use the adapters that come with them on existing radiator valves unless they are a direct fit, The adapters really don't work very well. You may also find that if you use these with old valves they will end up leaking fairly quickly. You are much better off getting new valves (Pegler terrier) that the motorised heads will fit to directly and doing a clean install.

If anybody buys one of these and needs the SW, let me know and I will send it too you.

I can recommend the energenie eTRVs - especially when paired with the nest. Not too expensive, IFTTT etc compatible. Only downside really is they can make a noise (maybe this is obvious) when auto adjusting. Must say I’m really impressed, no more baking upstairs as happened in our house.

HTH

Hi Orionaut, bit of a long shot this ..... do you still have the software for the USB programmer for the iterrier trvs. Have recently picked up some valve heads and the usb programmer second hand but cannot find any software on the Pegler site or elsewhere. Thank you, Nicholas.

+1 Draytons, I installed eight of them and no issues so far.

I had a set of these however each one as failed as the plastic fatigue causes the mechanism to break preventing the knob from making any adjustment to flow rate with temperature. This was after a couple of years.

Got some big standard ones - they work and haven’t had a problem. They have been on for longer and no issues.

forgot to say - leave one rad without otherwise the pump will die when all the TRVs switch the flow off - the pump needs some route for the water to flow.

we have the non trv in the lounge where the boiler smart control is.

Thank your both for the additional information. Those Danfloss pressure controlled trvs look the dogs I have to say dirtychincilla, but for now I am restricting my overhaul to changing the control heads on my existing trv bodies. NickK, I found the same plastic breakdown problem with the wax filled control heads on the Pegler trvs, so far not had the same issue with the battery operated iTemp heads that are a direct replacement. Time will tell I guess. Also thanks for the tip on keeping one rad free of a trv .... fortunately the system is already set up like this so I was forewarned. What I need now is some software that Pegler created to help with the programming of the trv heads. It is not essential as it can all be done manually on each head, but I'd like to find it to give it a go.

Long shot indeed. :)

However, I think I may be able to oblige.

Silly question, How do I send this to you?

Hi Orionaut, not a silly question at all. I thought there would be a PM facility but it seems that this has been disabled for sometime. I used the Trust feature which I am hoping has revealed my email address to you for you to direct email me a zipped up copy of the program. Hope this works.
