Are there good and bad TRV's?

Another good thing about those Danfoss PT40s is that they are wax controlled i.e. not liable to break. Whereas electrical TRVs i.e. the Pegler ones could just screw up one day and that's it. Pegler are not a reliable brand. However, I do work for the company that supplies the Danfoss PT40s so I am biased, but Danfoss have a good reputation for a reason.

Good to hear that the Danfloss wax trv heads don't break down. After 12 to 15 years I found that the similar Pegler wax controlled heads started to fail, no longer operating the pin on the trv valve. Cannot yet comment on the longevity of the electronic trv heads but I have been using a batch of second hand ones for a year now and they are still working fine (save for a battery chnage on one recently). Can't tell the overall age but I guess they must be a minimum of 5 years old I think.

The main advantage of the electronically controlled heads is the ability to set different temperatures at different times of the day. With my under powered system in a large house it has been a godsend, automatically keeping the living room warm whilst the bedrooms don't need heat and vice-versa. They have also allowed me to step down the pump speed from max so less noise, less pressure in the system and potentially a small saving in electricity. Will be coming up to a year's use soon, maybe I get a saving in energy use when I check kWh to prior years, but that was not my priority. One other benefit not to be overlooked is the weekly maintenance function that ensures the valve pins are kept free and working. No more do I need to go round all the valves and coax stuck pins to work every autumn. For those that are not aware that this is needed, it can mean the difference between a whole valve replacement or not.

Agree with Orionaut's comment though, they are not the quietest when operating .... its most noticeable in the bedroom in the morning. However, I'm rethinking my strategy on the timing so that the valve opens before going to bed in readiness for the morning rather than setting it to open at 06:30 and providing a mild alarm clock function! In the living room its quite satisfying to hear the valve head whirring when temperatures are reached, lets you know the little blighters are actually working.

Personally, based upon my needs and experience I'd opt for the electronic valve heads now having had both wax and electronic heads. I am just going to have to say sorry that I am not able to offer any advice on any of the more modern wireless or bluetooth controlled devices. However, I would comment that I have not found any need for constant tinkering with the settings that would require control of the valve heads via an app.

Hello every one i am using 6 terrier i-temp TRVs with two smart thermostats on my house the last two years and i am very satisfied of them until now, i was looking to find the usb dongle and the software for easy setup them without any luck until now, if any one have any idea about them i will appreciate to inform me.

Hi Orionaut i am very interested for that software although i have not find the usb yet you can send me it to my email?
Sadly, these have been discontinued. the more modern equivalents seem to be stupidly (Insanely really) expensive,, :(

They are still available on the bay etc but get them while they are hot. (I have bought a load because I wish to install some additional radiators and I also want some spares for the future)

According to Peglar they have been discontinued owing to poor sales . Well yes, YOU NEVER BLOODY ADVERTISED THEM YOU ******* IDIOTS!

(I really hate it when manufacturers manage to end up end up killing a really really good product because of this sort of stupidity, I really do... See also-Comfort "Fast Dry". Yes they advertised that, but they didn't tell people how it actually worked. so most people used it wrong and didn't think it made any difference, which it really did! )

I have used these TRV's for many years and I really like them, the only down side is that they are a bit noisy when they do their thing so if you are a light sleeper they may not be suitable for bedrooms. (Also, you need to change the batteries every year, not every two years)

Peglar still sells (For now, but you have to do deep search to find it) the USB dongle that allows one to program then from a PC but they no longer have the website that allows you to DL the software.

(This is a really useful feature)

The unit with the actual radiator valve seem to be almost unobtainable now, but you can still find people selling New-Old stock TRV heads.

If you want to use these, Do not use the adapters that come with them on existing radiator valves unless they are a direct fit, The adapters really don't work very well. You may also find that if you use these with old valves they will end up leaking fairly quickly. You are much better off getting new valves (Pegler terrier) that the motorised heads will fit to directly and doing a clean install.

If anybody buys one of these and needs the SW, let me know and I will send it too you.

Pegler's i-Temp documentation and USB controller software is archived here:

The software dates from 2011 and was designed for Windows XP and Vista but it started up OK for me under Windows 10. It's possible that it needs to be run under Compatability Mode for full functionality but unfortunately I have no Pegler hardware to test it with! I believe that it also works under Wine on MacOS/Linux.
