Are we British or English?

And people wonder where the Welsh & Scottish vs English stuff comes from ...

There's nothing I detest more than people describing the UK as " England " Drives me bloody potty !!

When you go away on holiday as an english person you are instantly treated with an attitude, however going away with a couple of scottish guys on holiday was an eye opener, everyone started out grumpy "english?" till they got "naw, scottish, he's english" and you can see how differently they are treated.

The arrogance of some people from England is amazing, like the one about football and rugby, it was obviously tongue in cheek, but we seem to think we have a god given right to win everything, we claim we invented the game which gets the scotts backs up because they invented it.

Welsh and scottish people get annoyed by us using English as they are just jealous :)

Which is patently wrong as there is evidence the game was played in some form in ancient China, Rome and South America.

On topic, I'm English, and will always say that if asked my nationality

You might write that on your forms, but if you have a passport, your British, the country you live in is the United Kingdom, and England is a province of that, until Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are absolved from the kingdom, each country is nothing more than a province. You were born in the province of England but you are regardless of how you feel, British and not English.

Im just playing devils advocate btw, im not personally having a go at you ;)

I'm neither!

But if I was referring to some one from England, I'd always call them English (not British). "British" just isn't a specific enough description. It's like saying some one from Iceland is "European".
It's also less controversial to refer to some one by the part of GB they're from.

Some very different opinions on the matter. I personally see myself as British, (thats whats on my passport anyway). I live in England and i see the word English as a Language :p

Therefore I am British and speak the English language in England :p

Thanks for all the replies.

Professional football is a bunch of overpaid ponces dancing about on a field kicking a ball around and rolling around and crying when they get a tap on the shin.

That better? :)

God, you lot are gonna have a riot this summer. :p
