Are you 18-24 and unemployed?

Ive been unemployed since i got back from travelling, though havent signed on and havent really been looking for a job too hard. Doubt i would have found one anyway seeing as im heading to uni soon

I was for a long time .. untill I recently got a job which I dont really even like, do it for the money, but I have to wonder if I wasn't happier/better off before.

Same ... well I finished uni and now I am on like 12k a year :( the job is okay I guess but that does not change the fact I earn so little

At least the staff are really nice and I am now on the job ladder :)

In a healthy workplace then people with a degree would get a job. The people who think having a degree guaratees them a job is a worry. Personally I would employ people with experience over those with a degree. This is because the people who have been working in that marketplace have the job experience to continue doing it elsewhere where as those who have a degree simply don't.

Of course the interview matters as does the salary expectations but if it came down to it and everything was equal I'd go with the experienced person everytime.

From an employers point of view now I have taken on 7 people in the last 6 months (IT / Finance - International Accountancy Firm - I head up the Project Management Team so this is all implementation, support, BA, some development etc.. type work.) and frankly I have been shocked at the quality of candidate available, particularly graduates.

The total lack of even simple 'business' / 'real world' knowledge and attitude of most of the graduates coming through is very poor.

been employed in both part time and full time jobs (not at the same time) since i was 16, only spent around 4 months out of a job (that was tail end of last year) even then i only claimed job seekers for 1 month of it (lived off of savings for a couple of months).

couldn't be dealing with being unemployed again, who'd honestly trade up to 1.2k per month (what i could earn now if i went full time) for less than £200.

Exactly.. very sorry but in my world a good degree = a reasonable level of commitment, intelligence and depending on the field enough experience for a Jr role.. not a pass to a 25 - 28K position

I'm still in uni. 2 years out of 4 to go. I did get a placement however for my 3rd year. Not many did..

It's not just that though you get housing benefit, council tax, medicine, etc. paid for.

Not if you live with family or relatives.

Technically I'll be in this category for another week but apparently my "full time" degree (9 hours a week) rules me out for benefits\JSA.

Yup.

I picked a bad time to start a career in finance. More or less voluntary employment though, I could find some sort of job if I needed to, but I've got some decent savings from when I was working, so I'm taking the time to chase a dream job (I'm so close!) and picking up a professional qualification using the spare time. Bit of travel too :)

why? you can still be looking for a job while at uni...are they thick?

No, its because I borrowed a pathetic student loan, and they probably think I'm being given big grants in their silly little heads over at the DWP...

Only students with children, or a disability, can usually claim welfare while at university, far as I know.

time to have a bad back then? :p that sucks though.

I fit firmly in this catergory until December when I'm 25, although I did get a job last week but walked out after a few hours as the "boss" was so up his own read end it was unbelievable.

I perhaps would have tolerated him but the job was based on commission.

Good luck to you all in finding a job!
