Are you a supermarket snob?

I go to where they stock the items/brands that I like.

We have a waitrose in our town - and it is the only supermarket here, other than a small tesco express.

That said I like Sainsbury's products - so we do a mixture of Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

I don't mind Lidl and Aldi, but I have no need to go there.

Am I a supermarket snob? Probably, because I don't actually like Asda/Tesco - tried shopping there a few times and just didn't like their in-house products as much as I do from Waitrose or Sainsburys. Of course non supermarket products makes no difference.

Tesco delivery for us. I can't imagine ever doing our own shopping inside a supermarket again, such a waste of time.

This. So much better than venturing outside.

Wife made me go to Aldi this morning, basics all were good but half the shop was random tatt, camping gear, cosmetics etc. Not bothering with that again.

I'm not a supermarket snob (except for Iceland because it's total gash), but I am a supermarket clientele snob. I will avoid ASDA, because every time I've ever been into an ASDA it's always full of soapies.

Though I do have preferences for produce: M&S > Ocado/Waitrose > ALDI for meats > the rest.

Nearest to me is a Tesco, though, so I most often buy from them.

Lidl - it's the closest and the only others within 5 minutes are Waitrose and M&S.

We usually go on a weekday evening so it's nice and quiet and we can zip round quickly.

No, I do my weekly shop in Lidl...

ASDA are awful for sandwiches though. And my local ASDA burns half the stuff in the bakery. Literally the only supermarket in the town where I work though.

ASDA are my least favourite.

and if so/not, which are your preferred ones?

I detest Asda, I'll drive an extra 10 miles to avoid one and opt for any alternative but most likely a Sainsburys or Aldi. A mixture of clientele and the sheer volume of them, ignorant staff, confusing store layout and useless so called self service areas which now either have conveyor belts or are too small to actually fit your shopping onto. I say so called because I've never used one without requiring assistance of some form.

However, right across the road from my local Asda is an Aldi. Great little shop, got everything I need at a cheaper price, I'll be served by a human and the car park is always near empty... It makes me wonder why more don't shop there?!

In order of prefernce these days I'd have to say:
Sainsburys
Aldi
Lidl
Tesco

I'm just trying to think where you could be as the ASDA in Govan doesn't have an ALDI across the road. Neither does the one in Milngavie or Robroyston.

I also think your going over the top with a few things here. Ignorant staff? Well you get them everywhere that is just some people for you. However you think ASDA go out of their way to employ ignorant staff? I don't think so.

Confusing store layout? How so everything has HUGE labels above each aisle telling you what is in that aisle. e.g. Breakfast Cereal. So you know you won't find toothpaste in that aisle ;). A mixture of clientale, well it's a public shop, imagine that. Different people shop in ASDA. Guess what different people shop in ALDI too.

Being served by a human isn't a problem in any ASDA I have been to which is why I'm wondering which one it is you are going to. Also their car parks usually have 200+ free spaces they are HUGE. I tend to park further away from the store and walk as only ignorant people tend to park close to the store as possible and they tend to not know how to park I even saw a woman in asda car park scraping her car against another whilst trying to park and laughing about it too at her inability to park. Imagine you being the owner of said car to come back and find thousands of damage done. So yeah I don't mind the extra 15 seconds walk to get a space far away from all the morons out there. ALDI however I never shop there unless I only need to pick up 1 or 2 things. I can never find a space their car parks are smaller than my driveway and they have 2 checkouts open for their 30 customers in the queue. They also don't let you pack your shopping they want you to unload onto a belt. Unload into your trolley then go to the side and pack your shopping. Terrible service IMO.

Also ALDI is a shocking store overall I find. There was even a dispatches investigation done on them and it was shocking. You probably should watch it as one of the undercover people was undercover in a Glasgow store. Basically no stock rotation. Stuff gets thrown about. No dates on some items. Mouldy food being sold to customers unless they complain. Staff are told to leave mouldy food on the shelves.

Basically I now avoid ALDI at all costs unless I only need to buy 1 or 2 things. But then I wish they had self service so I didn't have to wait 30 mins to be served by a human at the only checkout open.

M & S I have found is just overpriced dressed up stuff.

For example Aphonse Orange and Mango Presse with Spring Water. Costs an absolute fortune for just soda water with a tiny bit of juice thrown in. But it's dressed up in a fancy glass bottle.

It's also all ready made food. If you like to cook from scratch there is literally nothing you can buy in M & S

It's entirely dependent on the individual branch. My local Asda is huge, spacious and you always get served or self-served almost straight away. However, my local Aldi is too small, the car park is too small and the queues go back to the back wall of the supermarket. It is an utterly dire experience if you don't go at say 9PM on a Tuesday.

My only issue with home delivery is I'll usually order something I've really been craving for a treat for that evenings dinner and it causes serious irrational anger when it arrives and that items been unavailable or subbed for something that could only be considered a like for like replacement by someone who's never eaten food before.

As a vegetarian who doesn't live with meat eaters, my orders are always strictly vegetarian, with some meat substitutes to make if obvious. It's hilarious how often I get substituted a meat product..... though I suspect the wafer thin ham substitution may have been a brilliant joke (if you've ever watched the Royal Family).

Do get some surprisingly great substitutions now and then. About a month back for whatever reason they subbed two tubs of Ben and Jerrys for a different flavour... but did three tubs for the same price. They also didn't have a fancy slab of cheese I wanted which was on half price so like £2 for 200grams and then instead sent about 600grams of also really good cheese instead. There was other stuff subbed and increased, someone was quitting and having a "be nice to the customers" day, or high as hell because I got about £15 of extra food in that order.

I'd say 90% of the time substitutions are okay or even better as they put in a more expensive brand or a bigger pack of something, 10% of the time they substitute something ridiculous.

I don't do the juices or ready made stuff and whatnot. I'm talking almost exclusively about their meat and veg, so sorry to say you are greatly mistaken that they don't sell fresh produce. It kicks the arse of anything else, frankly. I also get 20% discount because the girlfriend works for them, which means I only need one mortgage for a weekly shop. :)

Agreed about fruit and veg quality at M&S. I'll always try to buy it there.

I go to Tesco and Waitrose about 50/50. Even though Waitrose is a couple of miles extra but I do like the fact it's smaller and I can get in and out quickly compared to Tesco. I'm not a fan of Tesco however with all the fake deals they do whereas with Waitrose you atleast know what your getting. I also don't mind Aldi for this reason and when the new local store opens I might go there more often. For meat though we tend to buy most of it from the farm shop in the village.

I have a Waitrose just over the road but I rarely go there as I can't afford the entrance fee. :p

Tesco is just 10 minutes away so I do the vast majority of my shopping there. Asda/Sainsburys/Aldi are all miles away and totally out of the question for me.

I don't understand the substitutions, it's all done by hand so I can only assume some don't care when they substitute it.

As for the original discussion, Tesco for me. 10% staff discount helps although I'd go there anyway as the local Saintsbury's is too small and generally the prices are rubbish. ASDA is alright but again the local one I find the quality is terrible.

I'll occasionally pop to farmfoods up the top of the street as they often have some good deals on frozen stuff.
