Are you proud to be British / European?

I'm very Proud of being English first then British then American. I am not in anyway European and never will be.

It's not about taking pride in other people's achievements, it's about continuing their legacy. Sure I had nothing to do with the English civil war, but I can try my best to make sure our parliamentary democracy remains the supreme authority of the land.

I think we're down to semantics here. That doesn't sound like taking pride in being British.

Does that mean that I cannot use the word 'pride' to relate to a sense of achievement that our little Island has made a difference somewhere?

Pretty much. I don't think this is being pedantic either. Specifying Britain is, perhaps. Taking a sense of achievement based on geography just doesn't make any sense. Why not increase the radius over the channel and feel proud of braille, the hot air balloon, and other things the French did. It makes just as much sense.

I don't know anyone (Brits) who considers themselves European. Most Brits couldn't care less about what Europeans think or say about them. We are far more like the Scandinavians than any Europeans

I think its more that people in Britain generally think that being European means something more than being from a European country. As a European i will tell you that you are right, we throw secret European party's where we throw money at Greek people while sending party invite with the wrong address to Turkish people:rolleyes:

Edit: Nasher proving my point pretty well.

Technically we are Anglo-Saxon which means we are a Germanic race.

I don't think anyone considers themselves "European" before their actual nationality (except perhaps a few who are trying a little too hard to appear liberal in the wake of brexit).
As for pride based on where you were born... hmm its a bit of a weird one that I cant really identify with. I feel pride with certain achievements I've made in my life but i certainly dont think "go me for being born in england".

i dont know about proud, grateful maybe that even the most down and out members of our society get at least a certain level of basic needs met.

i'll certainly not hide an immense level of pride in the nhs, troubled as it is healthcare to that level for everyone has got to be one of the greatest acheivements of civilisation.

there are things we could do better, i find it funny that i can speak to a german living in germany and get a reply in better english than many "natives" (or at least the natives that appear on jeremy kyle)

Oswald Mosley advocated considering yourself European first and British second in 1947 in his book The Alternative. It is a very interesting read and I highly encourage you to read it. I posted a link to Europe A Nation wiki page on the first page of this thread that is also an interesting read.

It is sad that Oswald Mosley has such a bad name because of his leadership of The British Union of Fascists. He was a guy I find myself agreeing with a lot and he understood that Europe was essential for the well being of this country. He hated petty nationalism and instead advocated pan-European nationalism instead because he said petty nationalism was the major mistake that Fascism made. He is a very interesting guy. Did you know he was thrown out of the Labour part for being too left wing and was also a member of the Conservative party as well before starting the British Union of Fascists?

Proud to be British and Muslim.

I'm proud of some elements of being British, ashamed of others. I would say I felt more European than British though in general.

I'm not in the slightest bit European. Our "European cousins" and especially the French hate us, and Brexit has shown how petty and child like their politicians are. So no I don't consider myself European.
