Are you way too casual with leaving your laptop/netbook unattended?

Why would you take a laptop to a pub? Secondly why would the thought of leaving it alone even enter your mind. Unless you live in a small village where you know everyone and its safe, then why? Have you forgotten you live in the UK?

I leave my laptop unattended in a computer lab in college. It is very safe there though, you have to swipe a student card twice to get access to the room.

Sometimes I leave it on its own for hours. Would never do it in public though.

Why would you take a laptop to a pub?

I've done it a few times, free WiFi, some pub grub, get some work done, cold beer, read a paper. I think it is okay during the day in certain decent pubs when they are quiet. Obviously I wouldn't do it if I was there socially.

Is no one else reading this thread and thinking WTF is going on when you feel the need to take a laptop - one of the most singular and selfish things in life - to the pub?

Take that nonsense to a café where you can tragically try to be hip. Perhaps have a skinny latte frockapockadingadongachino. Cardigan optional.

Congratulations to all the people who have friends who they meet in the pub. I also have friends who I like to meet in the pub. However, there was a 2 month period where I had no internet connection at my flat, and my options for getting online were library or pub. Doing work = go to library. Checking emails, forums and Facebook = go to pub.

I tend to only take my laptop to places I don't mind leaving it, in terms of pubs, places I know the staff and a number of regulars. I do tend to leave it out on trains or in the library too, I accept I'm too trusting (which should've been beaten out of me by now), but so far, no issues.

Edit/ Yes, I could go to a cafe, but I'd rather have an ale than a weird pretentious coffee.

I'd never consider leaving a laptop that cost me £900 in a public place unattended. If someone nicked my laptop I'd be absolutely gutted. I don't even leave it in the locked rooms in between lectures.

Also if I'm in town and my laptop happens to be in my bag in the car with me I'll take it then too. Even though my car's contents are insured I don't know if I like the idea of my laptop with personal information on it being stolen!

I think you're mental for leaving it unattended on a train though!

My laptop is worth peanuts. I use it to carry backed up work on and browse the internet mainly. It has no useful personal information on whatsoever, apart from a couple of passwords (someone could probably wreak havoc with my user account here and a couple of other places, but that's it).

When I take it to college to work on, I won't leave it unattended, even though I'm in a remote location on the 9th floor of a tower block for the most part with CCTV all over the place. It's not sensible and is just asking for it to be pinched.

I used to leave my laptop all the time when in the library in the Med School. It wasn't the busiest of libraries on campus, it was secure (we all had to use our cards to get in out) and it was covered by CCTV. Guess I'm too trusting but I'd often leave it, head out of the school, up and over onto main campus then come back after lunch :/

you take a laptop to a pub then youre doing something wrong.

Leaving you phone unattended for any amount of time in a public place is just asking to get stolen. I dont get why people think its fine, whats the big f'in deal with leaving it within grasping distence of some ned? Cant you just look after your stuff by putting in a pocket?

jesus some people lol

Used to leave mine kicking about in the computer labs at uni for up to 30 mins at a time. Not a good idea in retrospect. It's worth buttons now, PCs for the win!

Leave my netbook around the house sometimes. As long as I lock it, its fine.

Same at school, I tend to leave it on the desks, locked, but I tell a friend or someone nearby to keep an eye on it. I wouldn't leave it for longer than 20-30 mins though.

Any other public place, unless I had someone keeping a very close eye on it, I would take it with me everytime.

i have a habit of leaving my wallet and phone on tables in pubs, i slap myself each time i do it but keep repeating it. Very foolish in some pubs.

I do this all the time I have to say it shows how honest 99% of people are that so far I've not lost it.

Had an XPS M1710 that cost 1400 stolen from a locked room and my phone stolen from my coat whilst at Trocadero. Did once leave my phone by mistake in Troc on one of the machines for a full 45 mins, was still there when I got back. Left my keys once too but noticed I left them 2 mins after leaving, managed to pick them up where I left them.

Well I took my lappy down the pub once so that I could show my friend the boxing which he was unable to watch the previous night, so please do explain to me how thats selfish?

I think the only place I ever leave it is on aeroplanes when popping to the bathroom. The risk of it being stolen is just too low.

Ive taken my laptop into a bar/pub a few times, what is wrong with that?

Doing dissertation or project work with video editing or some colour corrrection work or something, need to get out of the house and fancy a pint at the same time, maybe something to eat?

I find it pretty normal and know lots of people who do it.

We have a very nice local pub 10 secs from our house and it is a change of scenary to do work in, everyone knows me, so i can just get on with sme bits and drink, then walk 10 secs home later on.

I do it too. Left my laptop in a uni lab earlier today, came back to it still there.

I'll probably leave it unattended tomorrow on trains too...on, but with account locked...I do it all the time. :)

Mind you, I travel in First Class when on trains so there are far less dodgy fellows about and I get free power for the laptop too. :p :D
