Arma 2's performance - some kind of bad joke ?

My setup

Intel I5 2400 3.10ghz
Radeon 6870 2gb
4gb Ram

What the hell is up with this game in terms of performance ? im running the latest version of combined operations with everything set to high apart from AA which is set to Low and HDR which is on normal and post processing which is disabled, im also using a view distance of 2500... Now with my setup and those settings i expect a smooth performance especially with post processing disabled...

So i put myself down in Takistan in the editor (no ai or other units) and the frame rate is all over place. sometimes it will be 60fps or even 100fps when there is no vegetation anywhere but then it will randomly start fluctuating all over the place as i start walking about the map !

The worst part is that as soon as i look down a scope with some kind of zoom like an ACOG my frames drop as low as 20fps ! it can't handle zooming in on stuff !

I've defragged my HD, made zero difference.

How the hell am i ever meant to play this game with such ridiculously uneven performance ?

Settings:

View Distance: 4000

Quality Preference: Very High
Interface Resolution: 1920x1080*32
3D Resolution: 1920x1080*32

Texture Detail: High
Video Memory: Very High

Anisotropic Filtering: Normal
Anti-Aliasing: Normal

Terrain Detail: High
Object Detail: High

Shadow Detail: High
HDR Quality: Normal

Post Process Effects: Very Low
Interface size: Small

Aspect Ratio: 4:3 - Normal
VSync: Enabled

Average FPS in multiplayer game: 27 (Ping: 116 - Chicago server)

System:

AMD Phenom II X6 1090t Black Editing @ 3.20GHz (Corsair H70 for overclocking, should I?)

AMD Radeon HD 6870 CrossfireX

ASUS Crosshair IV Formula

G.Skill RipJaw 4GB Dual Channel 1600MHz

Western Digital 500GB Storage

Crucial M4 64GB Solid State Drive (Windows 7 & ArmA 2)

There MUST be a way to boost performance, my second card doesn't seem to be doing much at all. I'm on the latest drivers too (CCC @ Default settings), it gets unplayable in many combat scenarios.

Any tips?

What version are you on? But wow that is some low FPS you're both getting, definitely some issues there.

Poorly optimised, maybe... (not had performance issues myself) and run a 4870x2(over 2 years old?), but an i7 920 @ 4ghz. But people need to understand there's no other game like it that runs so much in terms of versatily/moddability/AI/ballistics/object handling on such a large "map".

I'm running the latest version (Non-Beta): 1.59 with latest CCC that was installed again yesterday. I also use the startup parameters (CPU Count: 6, MaxMem 2GB, Empty world & Skip splash).

Is there anyway I can enable CrossfireX and allow the game to take advantage of my two GPUs?

Thanks

Putting -winxp into your start up parameters should enable multi GPU.

crossfire/sli works for me without the winxp tag.

also change video memory to default.

very high uses i think 512mb. default uses whatever your card has.

antialiasing low or off. rest high or very high. post process low or off.

its bee said very high shadows gives bettter performance than high and medium.

i get significant gains from CPU overclocks.

Hi,

I still get only 25 FPS with everything that you suggested except Overclocking. Would it be possible for you to send me the following files?

"C:\Users\UserName\Documents\ArmA 2\ArmA2.cfg"

"C:\Users\UserName\Documents\ArmA 2\ArmA2OA.cfg"

"C:\Users\UserName\Documents\ArmA 2\UserName.ArmA2Profile"

"C:\Users\UserName\Documents\ArmA 2 Other Profiles\UserName\UserName.ArmA2OAProfile"

Thanks

Im using all latest.

my setup is an i7 920 @ 4ghz 6gig of 1600mhz ddr3 and crossfire 5870s @ stock.

arma2 loads of a raid0 disk pack, no performance boost but smoother texture loads when flying etc.

Will send those cfgs to your email.

also, doubt it will help but here is my target line (arma2 on D drive so watch for that)

Kind of performance do you get without any mods?

"-mod=D:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2;Expansion;ca;@ace;@acex;@acex_ru;@acex_usnavy;@cba;@acex_sm;@acre;@jayarma2lib;@mando;@ussocom_air;@ussocom_islands;@ussocom_misc;@ussocom_units;@ussocom_vehicles;@ussocom_weapons;@ussocom_ships" "-name=MAJ JackSpyder" -nosplash -noPause -world=empty -noFilePatching -maxMem=2047 -cpuCount=8

ALSO

view distance at 4000 when on ground? do you need to see 4k? no drop that to 2.5k 3k tops. maybe an abso max of 6k when piloting/ tank gunning. but then you would lower other settings.

I run an i7 @ 4.6Ghz and GTX580 and play at 1920x1080 with everything at max except No AA, No Post Processing (don't like the look) and Low terrain Detail (so I can see without grass in my way) and the @Ace benchmarks are 10-15fps max, yet in the game I'm getting 100+ so I'd ignore the @Ace benchmarks. However I found that on my system Scope zoom FPS is massively affected by my cards Nvidia Control panel setup - Set it to performance and get 100fps set it to quality and drops to 20fps in scope with no visable difference.

I think it must be res. I run just 1x 4870 and an i7 with everything on max, it does vary a lot between 60 and 30fps but its never jerky

Display res is 1280x1024
render res is about double
No AA or post process. Anything else available is maxed out

I used to run it on Conroe and get 5fps so its mostly about cpu and memory.
I have 1600mhz ddr3 tri channel 6gb
Use of pagefile memory I think would be disastrous, I dont even have one.
a lot of people say use SSD but Im running it off USB sata disk so that much be pretty slow

Kinda ridiculous but I ran this game on an nvidia 6800 at one point, very low res but amazed it was playable just about

I did spot one shot that showed 22fps but in the main I think Im pretty lucky it works this well for me
