Arma 2's performance - some kind of bad joke ?

"arma2 is so poorly optimised"

when call of duty, BFBC2, MOH etc have a 225km^2 with extensive mod support and incredible detail and a vast vast array of equipment and vehicles, not to mention support for any number of players and AI. THEN ill agree.

It is a huge game map wise, so never going to be the same as a normal FPS with tiny maps. Does look fantastic in high detail on Xfire 5850's :D

Awesome, I've just found out that there's 50-a-side deathmatch on LAN vs the AI! Playing CQB like a realistic BF2 and it's ******* amazing! - I realise this isn't major news to most but I only do single player normally as my interweb is virtually dial-up so when I hit Multi by mistake earlier I thought I'd have a look around and found out.

I've never understood this one personally, the game is massive and there is heaps going on.
It took ages for ArmA to be completely ironed out to the point that it was near perfect.
The same can be said for ArmA2. Some of the game experiences people are having here are leading me to believe that they either haven't patched it to the latest version, have a system problem or have are trying to force some ridiculous graphics options.

Why is a game that pushes the boundaries of hardware "badly coded'? Would you be happy to play the Source engine forever more? oh wait... that was considered badly coded when it was first out.

No it wasn't actually! It was praised highly because it scaled wonderfully with hardware and ran smoother at the same res and settings then other engines at the time with more realistic textures.

HL2 was always an amazing engine, scales amazing right from the start. Main thing now is Im not sure how well it can use multiple cores

70fps on a geforce 4 and still looked good, doubt it will go that low still but why should it

The game is a buggy as hell - it's just badly coded.

Saying the world is massive and there is loads going on is no excuse for you to be doing 60FPS one minute, then 20FPS a second later when you look in the wrong direction.

*bleep* Error processing: "Source engine [...] badly coded". Does not compute, dangerous level of bull**** detected *bleep*

The issues are usually compatibility or user error (or both).
This game can work completely fine, it does for me and the 100 other people I play with every weekend.

But if only every PC game didn't have it's issues with some peoples PC's, like my brink and ati card. You just have to find fixes and/or hope for the best with a patch :(

no one said that the game is not playable. some people prefer 60fps constantly but arma 2 is very demanding and doesnt allow that.

If your getting warping then your server hasn't been setup correctly.

If your getting texture pop ups install 1.59 patch.

Just because it doesn't run on your crappy machine doesn't mean its badly coded. Maybe, given the things the RV engine does your cpu just doesn't cut it.

And people wondered why crysis 2 was dumbed down :o

You think you're having trouble now? Just wait until that first time you try to join a multiplayer game and you realise you have to jump through a thousand different hoops to connect.

Best thing to do with ARMAII - uninstall it. It may be an awesome game, but the grief it causes just to get a game going is utterly ridiculous.

Try changing the view distance to 1500 or so, that seems to be the biggest fps killer. Changing the other options can give small gains etc, but view distance is the option that seems to slug the CPU down.

What nonsense are you talking about? what hoops? i can connect fine on many different Arma 2 servers :o

I think Bohemia's problem is that from OFP1985 to the ARMA series they have slapped on a SP campaign (which lets face it they arent that great) and tried to sell it as a game that can be just picked up and played. When infact its quite the opposite it requires quite a lot of thought from the player and you could say dedication to get the most out of it. The more you put in the more you get back. Thing is it kind of throws you in, rather then slowly adjusts you to the mechanics.

As for coding, well the scope of the game is that of a simulator. I cannot begin to imagine the complexity of what goes on behind the scenes. But I can imagine its not play school arithmetic calculations going on in the background.

A good point that someone might be able to answer. Has there even been a sim game released that doesn't require a 10+ year advanced of hardware in order to play with all the bells and whistles enabled and at a fluid fps?

I don't know maybe someone knows :p Sim City doesn't count :D
