***ArmA 3 Thread***

People are deluded if they think they will flick some magic switches and the game will become perfectly optimized for release. I weep for the 'its only beta' crowd. They really need some therapy.

No one is expecting magic switches. Rather hoping for some better performance on release and post launch. Similar to what happened with Arma 2/oa.

I was under the impression that changing one setting in Arma 2 was in fact a magic switch....if I recall correctly changing video memory to default?

Reading back over the posts here I see nothing verging on delusional

on a high enough end machine does Arma2/Arma3 get totally smooth ?

I've had decent frame rates on both even with my mid system (3770k overclocked, and heavily overclocked GTX570) - but neither have ever felt smooth like other games (DCS A10 etc - other sim orientated games)

that feeling of slight "lag" like you do when you play multiplayer games with a higher ping - bursts of smoothness but then suddenly not - brings me out of the immersion

Arma 2 is reliant on the server and other players. If one guy has a problem then he needs to be kicked really

Im no expert but the server has its own framerate which admin may be aware of. If this is 10 then your machine isnt determining the lag.
The game can be fine but the mission is dragging the server down for some reason, you can blame whoever but lag is not the game but the map, the mission, the AI, scripts even a bad model could do it I suppose if it hung the server on some kind of loop.

We used to get stupid lag from people modding themselves with fancy glasses or custom faces, it didnt mesh well and the game was kaput from then on.
Not sure if A3 is similar, it will be refined no doubt and in some cases made worse with bad mods

Absolutely. Bad missions and poorly optimised servers give arma a bad rep. Unfortunately this is (usually) the case for almost all pub servers. You have to get into the clans with mod servers etc to find the competent mission makers with competent server admins. Well setup hardware and server settings. Extremely efficient made missions and mod packs. Maybe even headless client setups for AI heavy stuff.

When done right, playing a 40 man insurgency type deal with loads of mods, crazy action. 50FPS server side and no desync gives a great gameplay experience.

So I can just copy that into Arma 3 steam and it'll appear as an asset in the mission editor or even multiplayer if the server admin have loaded it

Everyone needs to get that Fred41 guy to optimize their code. He's done an amazing job of that warfare mission. Melbo told me about it and the server was running just as good as the editor with 50 players. Bloody impressive.

Edit: Well that Blue1 server was good until the admin started raving about his server will be one of the only good performing ones for months, I corrected him and he banned me lol. Is this Battlefield 3 or Arma 3? :p

2 more days till we get the remaining goodies on the dev branch, really enjoying some of the servers I've been trying out, quite a few have been optimized and getting good framerates and no desync.
