Arsenal are a French team.

The problem is that generally speaking, English players simply aren't good enough relative to their price. Would you rather have a Fabregas or a Selley?

Bringing youth players through isn't easy anymore either because in their wisdom the FA have banned clubs from recruiting English youth players who live more than 90mins(?) drive from the club. So the catchment area is now much smaller, and a club like Arsenal may lose out to other London clubs anyway (more chance of them getting a game). It's not like the old days where clubs like MU could poach the best talent from all over the country. This forces teams like Arsenal to start recruiting foreigners, on which there are no such restrictions.

Which team who has won the champs league recently has done so without loads of foreigners? I can't remember 1.

Well if you look at Manchester United back in 1999, they could have fielded (apart from the goal keeper) an all British team + a few irish and still have had a team that would have been capable of beating almost anyone.

Who scored the winner?

And none of our Arsenal fans have told me who beat Arsenal in the first world cup final!!!

Who scored the equaliser and got the assist for the winner?

Vandle, coming from the North East and my opinion of your general footballing knowledge I'd be quite suprised if you didn't know who won the first World Cup (club) and who they played in the final. It wasn't Arsenal.

I know :o
Ive tucked myself up big style :o

The winners were West Auckland.

I knew it had an Arsenal connection and for some daft reason I thought they beat Arsenal in the final.

I used to play for our works team (when we had one) and our home ground was WAFC.

Oh dear , embarrassed now.

are you getting mixed up with the story of it? i think the people holding it thought west auckland wafc, was woolage arsenal football club also wafc. i think :)

Yup. I've played many a game at WAFC. When I was a teen that was where a lot of our cup finals were.

Doesn't say in your link but when they won it first in 1909 they beat FC Vinterhuir in the final, then returned 2 years later and beat Juve, meaning they keep the trophy. It's been stolen twice in the last decade :(

Edit: Yes they were mistaken by fans as being Woolwich Arsenal, but their entry into the tournament was not due to mistaken identity.
