Arsenal Rant.

Indeed.

BoomAM, it really isn't that hard to comprehend. But if you want to make an issue out of it, approach the situation mathematically:

Arsenal played their 8th choice left back (Senderos/Flamini/Larsson depending on which match it was or your view of who is the best). We can prove that by listing 7 players, who would be chosen ahead of that player, if they had been available at that time:

Cole: INJURED
Clichy: INJURED
Lauren: INJURED
Toure: INTERNATIONAL DUTY
Cygan: INJURED
Eboue: INTERNATIONAL DUTY
Gilbert: INJURED

So that's the 7 best players in the LB position all unavailable, ergo the player who did play (Flamini/Larsson/Senderos) was the 8th choice.

Note this is a genuine 8th choice player, we aren't "cheating" because players who were on the pitch, but in another position (i.e. Campbell and Senderos at CB) are not included in the 7 unavailable players.

If we wanted to extract the urine and make not 100% foolproof claims, we could say well actually, our 8th, 9th and 10th LBs are Campbell, Senderos and Hoyte, so we were actually on our 11th choice LB :)

I was always led to believe that if your fullbacks are out you play a winger in there.

But i suppose the though of Reyes attempting to tackle made Wenger *shudder*.

None of our wingers are really good enough to defend though. You think the thought of Reyes tackling is bad enough, I doubt Pires would even try to tackle anyone that came at him.

And from now on, I'm just going to arbitrarily add another number to what choice our LB is for each game we play, purely to annoy BoomAM. :p

You lot asume, because i dont agree with it.

Well it seems to me that you don't comprehend, because what you were accusing us of inflating the numbers. It's not inflating the numbers, if the 7 best players in a given position are all unavailable at the same time.

They're people who have been drafted in due to having too many personel in other positions.
Talk about inflating the numbers.

Case Example:
If i used your logic i could say that Milan have spent most of the season thus far with the following injured in the LB position: Kalazde, Maldini, Stam, Cafu, Simic, Jankulovski & Costacurta.
But, as not all of them are true LBs, its inflated numbers. As that would be cut down to 3 players (Kaladze, Maldini, Jankulovski).

Are those 7 players the best 7 players at LB at Milan? If they are, were they all injured simultaneously? If so, then Milan have played their 8th choice LB this season as well.

If there are 7 better players than player X in position Y, then player X is the (at least) 8th best player in position Y. That is a pure, indisputable FACT. I have already demonstrated that the best 7 LBs at the club were all unavailable, therefore Arsenal were forced to deploy their 8th choice LB.

Moving onto the issue of wingers, Ljungberg can tackle - it's one of the reasons he's more of an asset in Europe than Pires.

Well it'll just have to 'seem' that way for you.
Because i dont see the point in carrying on this discussion any further when all possible points for it have been made.

Does that make Lehman 24th choice striker?

In a 25-man squad, with 2 goalies, then yes, it probably does (he's scored a few goals in his career, so I'm assuming he's better in the opposing penalty area than Almunia).

However, we are not looking at a 25-man squad, because its not just Champions League we are talking about here. Lehmann would be way down the list, 40-something choice probably. Don't forget that some of the left backs we've used this season can't even get in our Champions League squad :)

That puzzles me.
Arsenal in the league arnt doing particularly well.
But in the Champions League, with a few players back, i full expect them to walk all over Madrid. :p

naa it will be a tight game, by that i mean ther will be plenty of goals but not many goals between them. Its going to be enjoyable spectacle to see two appallingly bad defensive teams go at it.

This left back nonsense is hilarious. A decent team should be able to perform perfectly well with a substandard left back. Last season, we won the CL with Traore at left back and he played every single game, and we had bad injury problems at other positions for most of the season. I think Arsenals problems go far deeper, i.e. the rest of the team is ether old or pants, with the exception of Henry.

I'm of the opinion that AC and GC offered us more than just a defender. They provided us the attacking strength we had down the left. Make no mistake most of our attacks came from the left hand side in the past it was Cole Pires and Henry linking up to devistating effect.

Currently we are doing OK defencively without AC/GC but our attacking options have been reduced. Other players need to adapt and take ownership of the ball and push forward to make different chances and opertunites.
