Is Artic silver 5 good as a replacment thermal paste for a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, as i have just changed my cpu and lost a bit of the compound and now when runnig prime my processor is hitting 55oc ( ambient 30oc) this is not good.

Yeah will do, i just heard somw bad things re this cpu cooler and thermal combination, also is 55oc full load to hot for a opteron 146?

Just to give you an idea, bro's Athlon 64 3500+ hit 41c idle, used the above mentiond paste and now down around 33c idle.

Thats quite warm to be honest, but the weather is hot right now so your cpu wont be super cold :)

You shouldnt realy let it get to 60.

Did you use a rice sized grain of thermal compound ?

Because too much can be worse than not enough :)

My room is currently 30oc the cpu is hitting 56oc max, the thermal compound i used was the stuff that was left on the bottom of my cooler after removing the old cpu. :)

That temp should be ok tbh, just wind down the overclock if it gets towards 60,

I would order some Arctic Siliver 5 and reseat the cooler with this eventually :)

Yeah may try some tomorrow, but i have a nagging feeling that somwhere on this forum somoene mentioned that the Artic freezer and Artic Silver 5 are not good together.

Ive used them together before now, and i didn't have any problems :)

Did you get good temps?

Also what household item can i use to clean my processor and heatsink before applying fresh compound?

That would explain that temperature then. Clean all the thermal paste off using something like Isopropynol, and reapply a rice grain sized blob onto the cpu.

Edit; Typos. :(

good luck!

btw, the stuff on the freezer 64 pro is on par with as5 but you have to burn it in for 200+ hours...

It is called MX-1 and depending where you look it comes out better than AS5. However there was very very little in it so yeah, AS5 will be fine. There is no reason I can think of why a cooler and thermal compound might be incompatible though

If you visit Arctic Silver's website there are details instructions on proper cleaning and application of AS5 - go take a look.
