Asda vs Shell V-Power Nitro+

I know this has been discussed a million times but recently I decided to try Shell V-Power Nitro+ just for the hell of it, after-all it would only cost around £4-5 more per tank.

My car is just a standard VW Polo 6R which has a minimum octane rating of 95 so I thought it would not make a difference.

Anyway, on Asda fuel I was consistently getting 47mpg but I have tried 2 tanks of Shell V-Power Nitro+ and have achieved 51mpg both times. I have been doing the same commute as before and always have AC on so my driving pattern has not changed.

It could just be a coincidence but from now on I'm going to fill up with premium fuel as it's not that much more expensive. One thing I've not noticed is an increase in performance but that's probably down to my car.

Has anyone else tried this and seen an improvement in MPG?

I went from cheap Tesco fuel to this and it made no difference to my mpg, but the car runs so much smoother on it - Audi TTS.

My last car used to get a steady 4mpg more and run quieter and smoother by far on it vs supermarket fuels

Those who are experiencing improved efficiency/power/smoothness/sex appeal, what are your cars designed to run on?

My MX5 was designed to run on 95 and spent much of it's life getting filled on a mixture of Asda and Shell Standard fuel. I started using V-Power for a couple of tanks to see if it helped and it did Sweet FA. Car was no more powerful, smooth, quiet or anything. Absolutely no discernible difference.

My Mountune map recommends 97+ so it gets Tesco Momentum 99 most of the time.

I've not put 95 in it so can't really compare. :p

FWIW, with the Leon I actually found that V Power Diesel made no difference to MPG but it certainly made the engine noticeably quieter, especially when cold.

A bit of 2 stroke oil does the same

I notice next to no economy difference between fuels ( never average the same even on the same fuel anyway, don't think I've ever put lower ron in it) but the car "feels" better on momentum for me.

The BMW didn't care, noticed no difference between any of the super unleaded fuels

I've only run my subaru on 95 twice when there was no better fuel around and it ran like crap, the mpg is so woefully bad i doubt it'd be that significant between the two though.

The gto runs on anything and makes zero difference. Considering its an import meant for 100ron I do question just how much of a placebo affect there is with nitro+ etc

Not that I make a habit of running it with normal

The whole import 100+ ron thing seems a bit of a myth to me, sure they have 100 ron in japan but they've not had it for that many years and it is their super (i believe their standard fuel is 96ron?)

Saying that when i owned my Honda DC5 it was only ever run on tesco 99 or vpower..

I have been trying different premium diesels in my 530d for the last few thousand miles.

I usually fill at morrisons if I'm using supermarket diesel, just for the baseline. I generally find that my cars run better on Morrisons fuel than Tesco / Asda / other supermarket fuel.

However, I tried Shell, BP and Esso premium diesel recently. With respect to mpg, Shell and BP made zero difference over a couple tanks of each. I am currently on my second tank of Esso, the first giving me an extra 40 miles or so, so that paid for the premium over normal fuel. This second tank isn't fairing as well, but this tank has been a lot more town driving admittedly, and so is still doing better than otherwise would have been expected (still over 40 mpg in a 6 cylinder, 5 meter long beast).

As for how the car has been running. It's a 8 month old, 10k BMW. I don't notice anything.

My Passat on the other hand, it runs best on Morrisons (I'm not putting in premium diesel in that car, well, maybe one or two tanks a year, just to clean things up a bit). And I put a shot or two of 2 stroke in at every fill up. That REALLY helps with cold starts. And the car runs great.

Currently got £30 worth of Morrisons finest petrol in the tank (was running out), car gets less mpg and doesn't pick up as quickly.

I usually run on V-Power since the engine is specificaly designed and recommened for 98Ron min.

Results depend on the engine, for most cars it will make very little to no difference.

You can't judge an MPG increase on different fuel type alone. Your journey's will not be exactly the same.

Having said that ASDA fuel I have found is horrendous. Filled up with it twice, and it just felt horrible, must have been some fairy liquid deposits in it still ;)

I've filled my car throughout it's ownership with v power and/or bp ultimate.

however, I filled it with sainsbury's regular stuff at the weekend. Reset the computer to see how it performs. MPG is a little lower but I haven't noticed any actual performance difference.

I too have found that the warm weather has increased my MPG ;)

Opposite for me. Having the AC on is starting to make a dent to the figures.
