Im just speccing up a upgrade for a mate just wondering what DDR2 RAM you people are using in this mobo and what the overclocking is like.

Specs

Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA
E2160
2gb DDR2 - undecided what do you suggest?

Ive seen people get to 2.6Ghz+ with this board but im not sure what RAM would be good for it.

Regards

Azza

E4400 @ 2.7Ghz 270 x 10

Corsair XMS2048 PC5400 C4, 4-4-4-12 @ 337Mhz 1.9v

RAM will run at 4-4-4-12 @ 350 1.9v but cpu @ 10 x 280 needs more volts to be orthos stable.

Hope this helps

This board will always underclock your ram so no point in spending big on anything fancy unless you intend to move to something more tasty fairly soon. Just your basic ddr667 will be fine, mine's kingston value.

Thats the RAM im thinknig of. :)

Any reason you want to get the asrock board for him?

Its not a good board for overclocking, and since your getting ddr2, I assume he's sticking with AGP card?

If he's getting an pci-e card or has one already, get a better clocking motherboard.

Matthew

I'm writing this on an Asrock 4CoreDual/VSTA with an e2160 at 290fsb o/c right now, ie processor at 2612mhz.
Using ddr2 ram you're going to be limited to around 290fsb on this board just as I and most everyone else seem to be. That means your pc5300 ddr2 667mhz ram will be running at 290mhz, way under it's 333mhz rating, hence there's no sense spending extra on ram that'll clock like mad unless you intend moving to a more expensive mobo soon.
For a budget build cheap pc5300 will suffice.

He has a AGP card - X1950 Pro

Its all pretty strange 'cos he wants to get complete new PC for uni and I have no idea why he is doing this now, but hey its his money.

Currently AGP pro cards are about 15-20 pounds more than their PCI-E counterparts. Get him to sell the x1950pro agp on ebay for a good price, and buy the PCI-E version from somewhere (shop around on the internet look at the prices). If he's smart (or you are for him) he won't lose anymoney on the card and he won't require the limiting asrock board. (i'm getting one but that because I am keeping the ddr memory for the moment which is worth sod all).

Seriously, sell the x1950pro and buy the pci-e version, can be had for only £90! :D With a better motherboard and DDR2 he can overclock MUCH better than the asrock ever will without it having serious mods.

Matthew

Well by your logic Scougar you'd be better selling your ddr ram and getting a better mobo as ddr is currently around twice the price of equivalent ddr2 ;)
