ASRock 775Dual-VSTA for Conroe (Core2) with both AGP/PCI-E and DDR1/DDR2 support

So far the pc seems ok with general xp use but when playing 2142 i can get random lockups which need a hard boot. Also when it locks up I get a highpitched noise from the speakers. I also ran 3dmark and i get the same lockup and high pitched noise.

Any ideas?

I'm getting the same problem in Med2: TW and X3 Reunion. I already have my RAM at 166 and loose timings. Going to try putting it on high volts to see if that helps.

Copied from my post in the memory section:

Ok it doesn't seem to be an actual physical problem with the memory but rather the timings that my Asrock DUAL-VSTA mobo set it to.

For my overclock to 300FSB I had to set the RAM to DDR333. The mobo then took the SPD timings off the memory for the standard DDR333 speed. It then overclocked the memory to 187 because of the 8:5 multiplier. I had tried manually setting the four main timings back to the standard 3.3.3.8 settings of the DDR400 SPD so it must have been either one of the other timings that I didn't manually increase or another issue with the overclock completely.

I have reduced the FSB to it's stock 266mhz speed and the RAM is at 190mhz at the DDR400 setting which is a 5:4 multiplier. Memtest passed 186% without any errors so right now the memory is stable. I am going to try upping the FSB to around 285 which will overclock the memory to 228mhz but if I remember rightly from when I first got the board that was actually stable enough.

So until I get better RAM I will have to live with a lower overclock then I had been using. Somehow I should have known that Hyundai Dell ram just wouldn't cut it

Ah well, if it stops my games from crashing then I'll be happy. It's not like they were taxing my CPU as it was. When games come out that will tax it then I will have long since bought a DS4 or P5B and DDR2 RAM and overclocked my baby to 3Ghz

I've just installed this MOBO, bearing in mind I'm not really that good with PC's, Can anyone please tell me what I should be checking in the BIOS settings screen, if anything? so far I have:

*changed RAM speed to 667

*Changed AGP aperture to 128MB

*Changed RAM to DUAL DATA

Is there anything else that would be good to change? most of the options skim right across the top of my head :p I'm running DDR2 Ram "5300" and a 6600GT AGP card.

many many thanks if anyone can help.

You may want to change the graphics adaptor from PCI to AGP. It does it automatically but better safe then sorry. Also if you're not using the onboard sound then disable that down at the bottom.

You can try overclocking it but run memtest to atleast 100% with every jump in FSB. Hopefully your RAM will fare better then mine.

Set the overclock method to ASync. You can try setting the PCI-E frequency to 117 or 119 to improve stability but only do this if it is needed and if it makes no difference then set it back to 100.

The best advice I can give is to look through this thread and see what works and what doesn't. I think I provided a link to another forum with a great thread about this motherboard. That was on page 5 or 6 of this thread I think.

As for my memory woes I have my FSB at 280, memory at DDR400 settings, all appears to be stable. Memtest is stable through to 105%. I may run it overnight to make sure. I can live with the 140mhz reduction on my E6300 if it means my games don't crash anymore. I just can't wait until I can afford DDR2, PCI-E and a nice new mobo :)

I am still gettingh crash problems in games. Totally random can be playing 3 mins or 20. XP locks and and i get high pitched noise from the speakers.

I reinstalled my old motherboard and I dont get these problems. Think i'm gonna stick this one on ebay and get myself an asus p5b.

Onboard sound options should be at bottom of advanced/chipset page, you'll need to scroll down to see them as they're not visible when you first look. Default setting should be auto already which Asrock claim means that just by installing an addon soundcard will disable the onboard.

I am still havingf stability probelems, i can get lock up in games and also when copying files from one hd to another and also running 3dmark. i have upgraded the bios and i am using the latest via drivers. I'm also using the latest drivers for sound card, vid card, lan card etc.

i have also tried taking out my sound card and using the inboard sound and i still get lock ups. Today I have asked for an rma number and I'm going to buy probably an asus p5b.

Cheers Ron & Topgun. Disabling this hasn't helped though, and the card isn't even recognised as being installed. When I do have it in, it seems to cause confusion even with the onboard audio being disabled.

Guess I'll just have to either make do with the onboard audio (which isn't bad) or get another board.

@ wnb.
Are you overclocking?
Your problems sound like memory errors to me. What's your memory type and what speed is it set to in bios?

I'm not overclocking. my memory is 1gb Mushkin xp4000 3-4-31102-4. the dram frequency is currently st to 166 but I have tried 133 and 200.

Hi, i'm interested in getting this board but the memory speeds have confused me quite a bit :p :o

currently i get to choose a divider and from that its simple to work out how fast my memory is running, with this board as you only get to choose a certain speed (be it DDR266, DDR333 or DDR400) what are the dividers used? or will it use whatever divider necesarry to get to that speed?

i currently have 2x512 sticks of HyperX 3500 that are good up to 235mhz 2-2-2-11 and want to know how this board will handle them or how to set it up.

i cant afford £800 on a new system to go conroe right now so this board seems perfect to just get on the level with having the chip.

You set the speed of your RAM and then it uses the best divider to get as close to that speed as possible. It's not great. I'd prefer the choice of divider myself but it's usually adequate. My memory is set at DDR400 and FSB at 280 and it's using a 3:4 divider at the moment to run my RAM at 210mhz. With your RAM you'll be able to set the FSB to 300 with luck and your RAM will be running at 225.

ive been using this board for fw months now and on rare occasions it hangs on post, quick reset and its fine. only running 1.9 bios so may do upgrade.
Well worth the cheap upgrade to core duo though.

I am sick and tired is this goddamn setup. Something is seriously ****ing with my computer. I used to think it was my memory but that's now running at very safe settings. underclocked from 200 to 193. I have removed all overclocks on the system including the graphics overclock which I never had a problem with before.

It still crashes in all the games I play. Its taken to rebooting itself now when I play X3 Reunion and Med2: TW is unplayable because as soon as I get into the battle screen the graphics crawl to a frame every couple of seconds. The last time I tried playing this game I never noticed a frame drop even in the midst of a massive battle. After a while of the low frames it likes to crash out with that god damn m*********ing high pitched goddamn hellsent noise.

I am losing it. I can't stand this anymore. As soon as I get any kind of money I am buying new memory. If that doesn't work then I'm going to buy a new PCI-E card, flog my AGP 7600GT and get a decent board.

I can no longer recommend this board to anybody but those that absolutely can't afford anything better. This just goes to show that you really do get what you pay for.
