ASRock 775Dual-VSTA for Conroe (Core2) with both AGP/PCI-E and DDR1/DDR2 support

Thanks mate, it's clearer now :) So what max fsb did you get on yours, I see in your sig that you are running your CPU @ 2.1Ghz so you maxxed out at 300fsb, like a lot of users here? out of interest, why didn't you get an e4300 so you could have theoretically hit (300*9) = 2.7Ghz for the same price.

It doesn't work. It's not the lack of FSB headroom that's causing them to fail - it's the lack of a PCI lock. The FSB goes to 350 or 400, but without a PCI lock the main subsystems fall over. So, if you start from 200, you get to about 225 or 230 and it does the same thing.

hmm, no-ones mentioned that before
maybe this isn't the board for me after all...

unless I upgrae in this order; dual-vsta mobo + e4300, PCI-e GFx card (prob x1950 pro), DDR2 ram, then a decent board. This way, i'll have a working system during upgrades :) then hopefully the new board (depending one which one I go for) will allow me to OC the e4300 to maybe 3Ghz and upwards

Well for starters they weren't out when I upgraded ;)

Also for the reasons stated above. It's like putting a dual core P805 into one. You still can't get the FSB more then about 30 over what it starts off at.

My current plan is to upgrade the memory and graphics when I have the money. Maybe get a nice SATA drive and then get a shiny new mobo like that new Abit beastie.

Hi,

I stumbled across this board accidentaly and it got me thinking.

I need to upgrade, for gaming, but I need to do it slowly, so this board looks ideal.

I put my gig of DDR, 7600GT and a new sata HDD.(old system becomes NAS)

Then I change to 2 gig DDR2, then a PCI card and then a new MOBO.

But..what processor...I think my main demand is memory first.

Should I stick with 1 gig and get a 2.4 conroe or get 2 gig and a say a P4 and clock it. This board doesnt sound like it will clock very well.
Im quite happy at the moment with my clocked P4 (northy)

Thoughts?

e6300 will be better then any P4 even on stock speeds. I went from P4 3Ghz to 6300 on 1.86 and noticed atleast a 150% boost in performance and that's not to mention the dual core benefits :)

Get the mobo and E6300 for £160 for now then you can work on the memory and PCI-E graphics card later when memory hopefully comes down in price.

I'm actually in the exact same position as you with 1GB RAM and a 7600GT AGP card. Unfortunately my RAM is getting quite venerable and it was crappy dell stuff to start off with. It doesn't like the mobo much so lots of crashes in games =/

i need help with DDR2 ram on this board if anyone can help me please

i just got crucial ballistix pc5300 ddr2 ram, 667mhz freqency, but it doesnt seem to run at that speed

im a noob at this stuff, so i dont know what im doing, but how do i get it to the correct speed? The ratio is at 1:1, i dont know how to change it.. please someone tell me how to configure the bios so that i can have the ram run properly!!

Just set the DDR2 speed in the BIOS (first option in the chipset part) to DDR667. Make sure memory compatibility is disabled and that memory voltage is set to high. It should work fine. Use CPU-Z or Everest to check that your timings are set right. If not you can set them manually in the BIOS.

Yep that gives you a speed of 704mhz when it's supposed to be 667. Not bad.

What processor do you have paired with the memory? I have never heard of the DUAL-VSTA going over a 300FSB without serious volt modding.

E6300, not touched volts, and ive had it at 320fsb, system fell over once it hit 5 mins in windows, though :(

Currently at 285 fsb, can have it at 295 100% stable.
Me too... only i can get 285fsb on an E6400 but adfter that random bad post and BF2 game screwed with Inno 6800GT (AGP clocked @ 400/1100)

Settled for clocked GFXCD and standard FSB till i save enough for new MOB/GFXCRD

E6400 fly's! with Geil 6400 CS4! :D

think I'll sit it out till Vista & 8800 CRD's

My 7800GS is overclocked from 400core to 470 (had it at 650 the other night..) and 1.35ghz mem (had it at 1.5ghz the other night...was at a lan party and overclocked the s*** out of my rig...gotta love ice cold rooms ;) )

I just bought this motherboard (well the 4core version) and with it an E4300.

looking at some ram.

is that Geil DDR2 PC6400 value ram thats on this weeks offer any good?
What speed will it be running at on this motherboard if the max fsb is only around 300?

Could you give us a mini review of the 4 Core Dual VSTA.. I am very interested.

Oh and the GeIL 6400 is a bargain - works fine in a S3 here. owever the differemce between DDR and DDR2 on this board is minimal.

however that was before the official support for 1066 DDR2 - so things may be different on the 4Core

I haven't got it yet, delivery due next wednesday. And I'm no motherboard expert, but ask what you'd need me to check on it exactly and I'll check.

Thanks mate - I just want the entirely subjective review.

"It does the job would buy one to build for a mate who knows nothing about computers."

Or "I could get it to work fine after continual tweaking but this is not the PC to build for your grandparents"

Or the dreaded "I am posting this from an internet cafe in France, the ASROCK burned down my house, killed my cat, got my girlfriend pregnant, framed me for two kilos of charlie and now I am on the run."
