OK, very wierd, my board has been fine since I bought it, I have just reseated my cooler with some better TIM and now my network adapter is not working.

Windows says it is fine and working, it has no problems in device manager, the error it throws up is "No cable detected" now the cable is fine, I just tested it in my laptop.

I googled "z68 extreme4 lan problem" and the exact same thing happend to this guy, and another guy in germany on another forum had the same problem. The thing we have in common is taking out and re-inserting our graphics cards.

Like I said windows recognises and says the adapter is working, but the lights on the back are not flashing (i turned the good night feature off so the lights should show), they flash for a second from power up then dont come on again.

So far
Tested cable
Re-set CMOS to default (taken off overclock)
Unplugged everything apart from essentials
Removed GPU

Completely stumped, any ideas guys?

does the LAN run off the same lane as the PCI-E slots? if so maybe something got damaged?
have you tried removing the card and using OBV to see if that sorts the problem?

EDIT : saw you removed the gpu :(

From a command line, enter ping 127.0.0.1. This is a loop back test. If it comes back as a fail, then either the NIC has gone or the IP software isn't installed or setup correctly. The fact there are no link light(s) strongly suggests a failed NIC.

I would certainly think about contacting the vendor and raising an RMA.

Admiral - The ping command is working

Pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply for 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply for 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply for 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Packets: Sent=4 Reveived=4 Lost=0 (0% loss)

I dont really understand that, what does that signify?

it signifies that your card is working :) or atleast getting the info it wants back from the messages it sends.
so either something like a virus or windows corruption is stopping the internet.
uninstall/reinstall drivers?

I just tried uninstalling the adapter, rebooted windows and it automatically found it installed the drivers and said it was fine. But still the same problem. Would it be worth re-intsalling windows, or trying a usb boot linux or something like that? Or would that not be the problem considering the software is working?

Damn, forgot my CD-drive is still in the post somewhere I forgot how old my original drive was it has migrated through 4 builds but no IDE ports on this now. Anything else I might try for the time being?

Just tried that software now but no luck.

Still saying everything is fine but still no connection light on my router for that PC, its like it cant be bothered to turn on. :/

is that not just 'netsh winsock reset' comand?

It sounds like it but it performs other fuctions too I believe..

This program performs two functions that reset to default status pertinent sections of the Windows Registry that may have been damaged by spyware or other problems. You should use this program only as a last resort to repair corrupt Internet protocols or malformed Layered Service Providers (LSP).

[edit] didn't work anyway

i would say its looking like the socket might be damaged then?
doesnt the loopback test just check the chipset is working and not the actual socket-router connection?

Ah so you think everything is working ok, it just cant detect the cable in the socket? Ill shine a light in there to see if anything is malformed, the cable clips in and out as usual tho

im not sure, i havent done anything network related for a while :(
im sure Admiral Huddy will be able to confirm/disprove that theory.
