Assetto Corsa

Have any of you ever gone from Assetto Corsa or something similar to drive a real car around the track?

One thing I found quite interesting games like AC versus actually driving the track was summed up in one of DAIR's recent videos from motors - the instructor is telling him don't go on that side (even though it looks like the best line when ingame) as the surface ain't great and will slow you down.

I've done a bit of driving in slower cars (performance golf) in AC versus real life with pretty similar results but I'd imagine very very different story for the faster stuff.

TBH I doubt I'll be doing the course, partly because I don't particularly want to bend my own car and secondly because the drivers brief is as 8am, which means we'd have to set off at 5am to get there and I don't really want to be driving back at the end of the day tired.

Not sure which course layout it'll be, but I'll get laptimes and compare them to what people have done ingame.

Oh noes :) I dont think Sstone is a risky circuit, its all modern F1 with massive run offs everywhere apart from the straights, so although I'd also give some places like Cadwell Park a miss for the same reasons as yours, I'd still go for it at Sstone (providing the car is in top shape of course - oil, cooling, tires and brakes wise)- if I went there in a first palce of course :) Copse-maggots-becketts is fun in any car, and relatively safe too - in AC at least :) (Of course even gravel traps are not completely harmless in RL as they can chip paint, so maybe you are right to be cautious after all haha ;)) But getting up at 5am does sound harsh as well...

Will they not let you drive without the 8am induction? Are you going there mostly for the social side (nothing wrong with that of course)? Anyways -enjoy! Sounds like a great day out regardless.

Yeah its already got enough paint chips as it is and it's the only one ive managed to find in its particular colour so don't really want it getting any worse. They do have the option of doing laps in the 695 biposto but I'd prefer for the mrs to have a go if only one of us gets the choice. Besides I've got access to a 'private' road that I tend to use as a track when its quiet ;) Lovely corners and decent straights, only prob is they put speedbumps halfway round now :(

A lot of it is for the social aspect, and possibly to do some shopping for more quickness bits! Plus my tyres aren't in the best shape, the car absolutely eats front tyres.

Yea, that's one area where sims still aren't up-to-scratch on the real thing. Driving surfaces can vary greatly, even ones that are built similarly. Combined with how tracks accumulate(and discard) rubber, it means sim racing tends to be a far more 'static' type experience than real world driving, even taking into account the somewhat poor attempts at rubbering-in that games like iRacing attempt.

Lost the best part of a second in the last sector, but hey..
I can work with that. ;)

I did a track day years ago at Oulton Park in a formula ford, and before I'd ever played a driving game. I didn't know the circuit. I'd be interested to try it again now.

driven quite a few fast cars but years ago.jag xj220 was quickest but then again that alone tells you how long ago :p

just got the porsche dlc some are very nice.just flinging them round nords.

anyone got a nice link to a good setup for this car ? thanks. (Porsche Cayman GT4 )

.
Speed bumps are not too bad, curbs are the real killer. One mistake around them say good buy to your entire front/rear wheel assembly - suspension, everything :o I drive like a grandma on public roads, partly for this reason :)

Let us know what kind of config they'll be running at Silverstone, because from what I've read Abarth does put on a good trackday.

Tank slapper cost me dear and got a 7:35.8

Now another go is needed! Setting up the GT4 is a pain for me. It's great in some corners, slides in others, then I can get full on under steer when using even a small amount of the brakes. Jenson Balance right now. :p

Here's a little challenge - I adjusted no settings on the car, track Optimum:

Whelp albeit I played with stability control off, cold tires, cold surface, etc. but that GT4 is pretty skittish understeer one moment oversteer the next and really doesn't make up pace on the straights.

EDIT: Don't think I'm gonna touch the times above with my setup without sticking some assists on just can't get between controls fast enough with the handling of this car.

Its got an interesting handling model - fair bit like an F1 car in terms of oversteer under acceleration - can make it do some crazy things on the edge of stability if you are a lot better driver than me lol. I've found a few times though it doesn't seem to grip at all when braking even in a straight line and you just kind of skate like on ice never mind understeer when braking.

This a lot. I keep thinking its aquaplaning, but it just seems to go towards a four wheel drift or understeer straight. It's also a bit unnerving when doing ~100MPH through a long, sweeping bend and it goes understeer, grip, understeer, oversteer, grip.

just checked no set up there for the porsche cayman :(

love the car tbh just wanna tweak it a bit.or get the best set up.

It's not massively essential and there aren't exactly a lot of options to tweak.
Besides, somebody else's setup might not suit the way you drive anyway.

Try just reading the popup description boxes, move a couple of sliders and see what happens.

Well I'm back already, was one of the worst events I've ever been to. No idea what kind of lap times anyone was setting as they didn't let anyone know. Drive you own car was limited to 2 laps per person.

The circuit was Silverstone national, clockwise. There was no entertainment or activities for the guests apart from remote control car racing, a vr demonstration which seemed really unpopular and the classic f1 pit crew experience which we only saw one person have a go on.

The guest laps in a 695 with a trained driver looked worth doing as they were actually pushing the cars round the track as opposed to being shepherded round in your own by an instructor.

We spent 15 minutes walking around looking for the entrance before we realised we had walked around the entire event. Oh and none of the grandstands were open, so if your family wanted to watch you going round the track they had to stand in the driver registration area and look through the window at the last two corners, that was the only viewing available.

All in all we were there just over an hour, saw all the entertainment twice and left. Would have rather played AC online instead tbh, would have been a better experience

Wow, sorry to hear that! Silverstone National sounds good(no Maggots-Becketts, but much better than the tiny track in the middle of it, whatever its name), but the rest sounds very disappointing. I'm surprised as I've been reading up on Abarth trackdays and people rated them highly, eg "On most track events, you only get 3-5 laps maximum. But here was a good 60 minutes of track time split across the Spider and the Hot Hatch 595." http://fox.agency/blog/2016/09/02/lewis-hamilton-abarth-silverstone-event-marketing/

Sorry no it's the one with maggots Beckett's, thought that was national without checking the track list, I'll get the Mrs to send me the pics of the layout and post it up later

National has Maggots, but no Becketts-Club continuation... But anyway, the Abarth trackdays are crossed off my to do list after your impressions, so whatever the config I don't think I'd be going anyway:)
