Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

Since you're the thread starter, I assume they've sent you a fix already?..

You'd be wrong, oh so wrong.

Nope I did get my drives RMA'ed and new ones back but ultimately they had the same problem of course due to it being firmware.

I'm waiting on the fixed firmware the same as everyone else :-)

Well mine is back... getting worse but not fully there yet

From my contact with them last time folks they sent out advance RMA's so I think they will handle this well once they know what is happening.

Patience.

I had my drives RMA's and got brand new drives. Two of. They are not fixed. It is either a firmware issue or a TLC nand issue. So even getting a replacement 840 will not help.

Well PCPER just posted a statement from Samsung.

Made my blood boil slightly because it made total light of the original problem and on going issues!

Hey ho at least they have once again acknowledged an issue.

To be honest though this being the 2nd strike I am beginning to think about options for upgrade.

Perhaps OCuk would consider something similar to the NVidia situation by offering refunds to allow purchase of a more reliable drive.

I don't think I am quite at that stage but getting there slowly.

They should give you a refund as it is not working as intended and just point them to the Samsung statement.

There is no argument here. The fact that Samsung are having to "fix" it again says it is not working as intended.

I also think that this is something that is likely never to be fully fixed given that it has taken a huge company two attempts to fix it. They'll start to resort to brute force workarounds which is what they are doing. Allowing you to run the restoration tool over and over again is a workaround not a fix.

Please not that the problem will effect anyone that uses this drive with static data. It has noting to do with not using a drive at all for any length of time. It is to do with data being written then left for months. Anyone that has their OS on their drive will be in this situation as many OS files do not get re-written. Neither do games that you install. So game load times will drift as well.

The restoration tool as already explained reads the files and then re-writes the file to the nand cells thus re-freshing the data.

What people never seemed bothered about but I certainly am is that in using your restoration tool you are wearing out the NAND. TLC has vastly limited write cycles than MLC. So every time you use the workaround provided by Samsung you are adding wear to your drive thus reducing it's life span. So not only can they not fix the drive they are suggesting you should decrease the life span of your drive using their tool to workaround the issue.

Not exactly the best idea really is it. I suspect though no one has said such that the more full your drive is the more you wear it when you run the restoration tool. e.g if your drive has 250GB of data on it. Running the tool will re-write 250GB of data. 500GB of data re-writes 500GB. Stands to reason.

So at the moment I am not prepared to add to my drive wear just because Samsung can't fix the problem.

So back to refunds - It has a known performance degradation bug they tried to fix and haven't yet. The work around is to add extra wear to your drive thus reducing it's life span (however small). Yeah... not fit for purpose. Refund.

I think I'll be enquiring at OCuk kings of customer service if they will offer full refunds and both my drives will go back.

I've dropped a note for bailey on the CS forum to see if they will accept returns for refund so I'll keep you all updated. I have mentioned others will want to know.

Customer service have said they will deal with this on a case by case basis As they have not been told by their supplier to accept returns. Intesresting comment i suppose which is fair enough but there is no denying there are issues with the drives.

Yes I'm in a difficult position due to my drives already being replaced by samsung but obviously they still have the issue as it is with the model. I've asked them to refund none the less as the model is defective. See what they say. Difficult situation for them and me to be honest but they have been very reasonable.

Decided to hang on to my drives in the hopes that Samsung sort out something official or fix it finally.

To be fair to OCuk they did offer me a refund but that was because I had already gone through 2 drives.

So great CS from them but I will just wait.

I thought about it but it's been a long day with car problems that need sorting and SSD's were last on my list and I didn't have the energy to fight!

That and I believe Samsung need to come good on this for everyone. Not just one person.

Agreed but one person rarely makes a difference and I think samsung need to fix this not Ocuk out of pocket. We'll see if they come up with the goods. If they can't fix it they should upgrade everyone to 850's

Funnily enough I would consider an 850 EVO and I notice the San disk ultra 2's use TLC nand now as well.

I also have 28 days to change my mind thanks to top OCuk customer service :-)

For those that are interested I have decided to return my drives after I had more time to think about it.

Sorry Samsung but I'm not convinced you will ever get to the bottom of the issue and fix it for good.

I'm interested.

Did you get your's from OCUK ?

Have they offered a refund or an exchange ?

They offered me a refund on both my drives. They did say they would assess on case by case. I got out while i could because i wonder if they can truely fix this. It may well be that the cell drift is too hard to compensate for in first gen tlc nand.
