AMD AM2 Phenom 9600+ quad core cpu
OCZ 4GB (4x1GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel DDR2
2 x BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI PCI-Express in SLI

2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKS)

The whole system works fine and stable when i use my AMD FX-62 Dual core 2.78

System problem
==============
Ive just upgrade the the cpu to the phenom 9600+
But the system freezes up as the system boots
If i try entering the bios it also freezes as i enter the bios setup
I also get blue screen of death every time i try to boot the system
I sent the chip back for testing to OCUK but they say the chip is fine
So ive cleared the cmos run bios in default settings
Re-flashed the bios again incase of bad update but seems fine
Ran the system in barebones I.E.
1 and 2 sticks of ram
One graphics card one hard drive
Still the system blue screens and freezes
Ive run out of ideas now anyone got any idea or had the same problem ?

Thanks EnCoDeR

The flash to 1703 alters a few of the settings (including setting the multiplier for hyper transport to 1x) these will make Phenoms unstable, but not necessarily X2s.

My M2N32WS worked with my P9500. Go through ad check each setting while using an X2.

I run 2 M2N32-SLI boards, both are utilizing a Phenom 9500 CPU, and after a few glitches when starting they both run stable.

My suggestion.

Using an old X2 processor, go into the BIOS and set FSB to Manual, 200 MHz, Multiplier to X10 and DDR RAM to Manual and select DDR800.
Be sure to disable SLI Ready RAM, and set DIMM Voltage maually to 2.00 Volts only. They should do fine at 400 MHz.

Boot and check using CPU-Z that the CPU is indeed clocked at 2 GHz and the RAM at 400 MHz.

Shut down and try switching the CPU. I have a bad feeling that the AUTO setting is misinterpreting Your DDR2 1066 RAM SPD setting up some odd values. That is why I suggest seting Your RAM Speed to Manual 400 MHz.

Best of luck

Thanks for the info tried setting manually but still the same blue screen as soon as the system boots

I’ve just changed the chip to the Black edition and that’s the same too
I’m going to take it and go to the Intel quad core and be dammed with AMD
Shame really been with amd for years now

But after reading the forums on the amd site and asus site there’s major problems
With the L2 cache and the B2 stepping not being able to control the addressing
Of the chips

I’ve now even tried the gigabyte mobo
That OC said to try as they have had a stable system running on it
But still no luck with that either

Is Your MainBoard running OK with an X2 processor?

DDR2 1066 RAM is not certified for use in this Series of MB's so do You have access to DDR 2 6400 RAM?

This 1066 RAM of Yours may be to blame...

yeah system runs solid as a rock on the X2 chip

and yes the chip blue screens on 2 motherboards
Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 nForce 570 SLi
Asus M2N32 WS Pro nForce 590 SLi

it also dose the same on my other set of ram as well
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)

so im out of ideas

And the GA-m57sli-S4 is of course flashed with the new BIOS Ver FE. (Just cehcking.) When we are out of ideas, we must have missed something somewhere.

Blue screen is a windows invention, so just to clarify things, Can You get into BIOS SETUP using the Phenom Processor?

If You can I may have one more thing to try. Give me a hoot, will You?

ChrisD

One thing just strikes me. 2 different Phenom CPUs, One stock 9600+ and one 9600+ Black Edition. 2 Different MainBoards, and 2 different set of RAMS. That leaves us with the power supply or Your DiskDrive, but I will go for the Power supply. Can You lay Your hand on another power supply, at least 550 Watts. When windows is booting CPU use is close to 100% and current drain is maximum.

sometimes i can enter the bios with the phenom in
but 86% of the time it freezes as i enter the setup mode

Still the same with my older 160g wd hard drive in
and my old coolermaster 620watt PSU

reading even more of the amd forums and asus forums
seems to loads of peep having the same problem with the phenom's
on all boards :S think i bought a really bummed chip

I am really puzzled. I have 2 Phenom 9500s, one on ASUS M2N32-sli DeLuxe running 2607 MHz, and the other is using a M2N32-SLI-Premium Vista Edition and is rock stable at 2420 MHz.

In an earlier post, You said that the stock 9600 had been on a trip to the shop for testing and they said it was OK. How about asking the shop how they found that out, ask them which components they did use to make Your Phenom run, or better, make them prove it to You.?? (Then buy that setup from them --- As I understand You have just bought the M2N32-SLI WS board, so I'll be dammed if they will not switch Board with You..)

I still think there is something not right here, we must have missed something. 2 CPUs, 2 MainBoards, 2 sets of RAM, and now even 2 sets of Power Supplies, and none of it is working... You said You'd also had access to a BE that does not work either... I am just sitting here waiting for the postman to deliver my first 9600 BE. Ill keep You Posted on how this one fares.

Last, these new processors must be under warrenty from Your dealer, so You must be able to chose between him proving he is right when he says Your chip is OK or he must replace it.

Best of luck

ChrisD

Edit: Chip just arrived, Ill post later on how it fares.

ok even more bad news ive just recived the ( NEW 1802 bios update )
direct from Asus Support in China
guest what now i cant even boot the system :S
it now locks up on the post screen
even after a reflash just incase it went wrong
reverted back to 1703

Well, here is my experience with the 9600+ BE I just got this morning.

The M2N32-SLI Deluxe, will not start the processor The Board refused to start the CPU at all. I have a power meter that shows the power drain from the mains and I can clearly see when the CPU is started. You get a power surge of over 50 Watts when the CPU comes to life. I have Corsair Pro RAM with LEDs so I can see when memory is accessed. No memory access which verifies that the cpu is not started at all. Well, as soon as I put the 9500 back in, the board started first time.

My ASUS M2N32SLI Premium Vista Edition, works with the 9600+ BE !!

The 9600+ BE started the first time and every time, no problems at all...

I now suspect the BIOS from ASUS and GigaBye for that matter as well.

The Identifier string from the 9600 is different from the 9500, and if the BIOS does not recognize the string, it does not know which parameters to load, and then it simply quits, just like the bios without the Phenom support.

Maybe the bios from the Vista version has included this identifier string in its lists. It certainly seems so.

I have a HEX Editor and I will give the 2 bios versions a go to see if anything in there is written in plain language.

It seems You are left with 2 options, Get a 9500, and raise the FSB as far as it will get. You will be able to push it pretty far using 533 MHz RAM.

Or, buy a FX790 MainBoard M3A32 MVP is the name. This is Phenom Certified.

Best of luck
