how does it compare, i have the recon, it sounds amazing, and i think it has an option for noise cancellation for the beem mic included. + Quad core sound chip. im not likely to replace it in the next 7-10 years :L

Recon 3D was not well received, for good reason also.

Define 'high sample rate audio'. most games are 44.1khz or 48khz and even then it's not lossless and for good reason too - hi-res, lossless audio takes up monstrous amounts of space.

Enough for difference in quality to be discernible with a dedicated sound card compared to on-board.

Lossless - usually not. But better than your ripped 128Kbps mp3.

That doesn't explain what you mean by 'high sample rate'. 44.1khz 16bit, for example, is not what most people would consider 'high sample rate' as that is 'just' cd quality, yet lossless 44.1khz 16bit is still better than the audio content of most games.

Can you provide any examples of this high sample rate audio content you speak of?

One of my friends is Chris McCormack he is a music producer but also does mastering, very well respected and worked with the likes of Gary Numan.

His view is 128Kbps mp3's are terrible, however 320Kbps mp3's even on well set-up gear (and someone with trained ears) are almost indistinguishable to WAV output. After his advice I rip everything now at 320Kbps mp3's.

Not much wrong with 128k. You have to consider that this isnt just music we are talking about. Game audio covers everything from music to speech and a lot of that stuff doesn't need to be acoustically transparent. Pops and bangs, leaves rustling and other such noises dont need to be rendered in glorious high definition 192khz audio. background music, likewise, doesn't really does it? recording all game audio in high definition is..indulgent, if nothing else. Just look at MGS4, something like 5gb JUST on the audio alone lol.

Almost, but not always. It's horses for courses but there are definitely times where an mp3, encoded by any encoder at any bitrate, will not stand up next to a lossless compressed format. So much so that for me, lossles is the preferred storage medium. Drives are cheap these days anyway, so why not? Its very easy, and very quick, to convert to mp3 if and when I need to (ie, taking a copy to put in the car). However game audio is a different matter and i suspect SC's claims that most games use 'high sample rate audio' (whatever that really is) are almost entirely fabricated.

Looking for a soundcard to replace my PCI Xfi Fatality Champion (2005) and I'm happy with it. Don't like the gray cable which connects to the frontpanel on mine which ruins the clear interior and seen a few unboxings with a single PCIe device. However, once my order for a couple GTX680 comes in there's next to no room inbetween GPUs for that soundcard and this would seem to fit the bill as a replacement but not really clued up with Asus soundcards if this fits my needs.

My spare PCIe X1 is above PCIeX16 slots which leaves plenty of room for GPUs to breathe. Headset is the Sennheiser 350 which isn't high-end I know but used mostly gaming/FLAC (24-bit|176Khz)/bluray with a third of the time listening through my 5.1 setup. Rolling Stones is the majority of remastered HQ Flac. :)

On another note with Windows 8 around the corner, I noticed this in the specs (will there be absolutely no W8 support?):
*Dolby Home Theater v4 supports Windows® 7 only.

OcUK have Phoebus back in stock!! :)

Decided to order this Phoebus to improve soundquality, airflow/layout from the old Xfi Fatality that snakes wires over my clean case!

Moving on: Asus website has no drivers listed under Download tab so I presume we are all using the supplied drivers? Already checked official Asus forum for news. I did hear that Asus allegedly lacks regular drivers updates and unofficial drivers offers frequent updates for a better experience... not sure who usually does them since I've never used Asus soundcards before.

Mine arrived today with some other new bits. Won't get to set it up for a bit (decorating) but wondering how the Dolby V4 performs?
I had good reason for a quality soundcard...

Anyone like strong bass?
