Asus RX480 Dual problems

I brought an Asus Rx480 8gb about 2 weeks ago as an upgrade for my old GTX760. Since day one its been crashing to a blank screen during gaming (black/grey) and I have to hard reset the PC.

So far I have done a clean install of windows 10, replaced the PSU with a 750w EVGA G2 and update the bios to latest. Still it crashes during games.

The only thing that seems to work is setting the power limit in wattman to -25, tried -15 but it still crashed. The temps are fine at 60 and CPU is around 40-45 so thats not the problem. It can only be a faulty card or my motherboard can't handle the card, it a MSI Z87-G43.

Have done a lot of reading and found many other people with the same issue. There was a issue with the card drawing to much power but that was sorted with an update.

Anyone got any ideas or should I just send it back. Not sure if I should try another 480 or just swap it for a 1060/1070

Apologies you are having issues, have you tried downloading the latest drivers from our site? Also have you updated to the latest AMD drivers? We do offer a 3 year warranty on graphics cards should the unit be faulty.

If you continue to have issues, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards

I'm not familiar with your motherboard but if you have the option have you checked that PCIe gen 3 is selected - or alternatively (but not ideally) try gen 2.

You could also check to see if the Card has a BIOS update available.

I would also check that the bracket screws aren't pulling too hard on the card - if it is perhaps loosen the MB and try and shift it closer to the back plate and retighten then reseat card etc...

I also had one of these cards about 1-2 weeks ago, exactly the same problem. Tried Drivers, Mobo Bios updates. No joy. I just returned it and got a refund, OCUK were very good about it. It seemed the card crashed under any 3d load on anygame, underclocking it helped to slow the crash but it always happened.

Funnily enough this is the 3rd ASUS AMD card I have had to RMA (previously two 7950 ROG's I believe). It has completely put me off buying any ASUS GFX cards in the future.

I am now in the same boat as yourself, try another 480 at the nice prices right now, probably the Powercolour Red Devil or Sapphire nitro, or go for a 1060 6gb, until then trusty 770 to the rescue!!

Cheers for the replys. I have sent it back for a refund as I was within 30 days. Issue can only be with the card or my mobo. Looking to build a new razed 7 pc in a few months and so will just pick up a card at the same time.

I picked up a 1060 today for £240 and its worked great. Getting better FPS then the RX480 and its been rock solid even with a hefty overclock.

I am having the exact same issue with my Asus Rx480 8gb that I also bought a few weeks ago.

I too have down clocked and undervolted but now I'm annoyed by the poor performance and lower than advertised speeds. I want to RMA but don't want the hassle of being stuck without a replacement for ages :(

Hmm I've had my Asus strix Rx480 for a few days, and it has crashed but only on the 1st day I used it. I haven't really played anything for over 45 mins since tho. Worried mine might be DOA now...

Just let Unigine valley run overnight and didnt crash. Going to assume those crashes before were an isolated event

mine's arriving today too. will update here with any issues. I wonder if Gibbo has any info on the return/failure rate for these cards as i'm seeing a stream of posts from people having crashing issues on them...

Yes I too will update this thread. I appreciate the rest of my PC is now ancient in hardware terms. Nevertheless, the motherboard (MSI P67A-GD65 B3) runs UEFI and I am using the latest version of this. However, this was released in 2013...

the motherboard (MSI P67A-GD65 B3)

If you do have problems roadie update your BIOS. I had major problems with the r9 280x because of the power draw on the PCIe slot in my MSI P67A board - updating to the latest BIOS resolved this. However, you should be OK as the RX draws less power than the R9 so hopefully you wont have the issues I experienced.

A word of caution though - on my MSI P67A board the BIOS update included the PCIe power update but for some stupid reason they included the ivybridge chip compatibility update within the same update - and MSI do issue a cautionary warning now if you're running a sandybridge setup. A lot of people managed to brick their motherboards (but i'm guessing a lot would have been through user error) - I had no issues but I always update the BIOS in the safest environment, the BIOS, via a clean known working USB.

As already stated this shouldn't be an issue as the RX draws less power but if you experience a long loud beep/beeps or no signs of life - check your BIOS and be aware of the above.

Thanks for the information. However, I have been running the latest version (v4.3) for years now. The only oddity is that MSI Control Center (which I use for fan speed profiles) thinks the Intel Management Engine isn't installed when it is. However, I can't remember if that is a Windows 10 issue? Nevertheless, I have no other issues. So far...

Anyway, Martin is due to deliver the card around lunchtime. The only potential other potential issue I can think I might have is power related. My PSU (an Antec NeoHE 550W) should be sufficiently strong, but it only has 6 pin PCI-E cables. I ordered a PCI-E to PCI-E 2.0 adapter along with the card to deliver power to it. Here are the PSU specs:

Only age is the factor and that's irrelevant if it's running OK - you shouldn't have any power issues otherwise (assuming you haven't got masses of HDDs installed and numerous peripherals running off USB).

Hope the install goes OK.

Well it arrived, I have finished the painting I was doing and now it's time to see to the card.

It's installed with the latest AMD driver. Idle power consumption looks maybe a few Watts better than my 670, which is good!

Something I have seen people show is the ASIC quality within GPU-Z. I'm seeing 78.3%.

Will now run some Heaven to see how that compares to my 670 and whether the card is stable!

Well it completed the benchmark. It wasn't hitting the maximum advertised speed, but was instead sitting 100Mhz below at around 1225Mhz. Anyone know why this would be?

Fan sound with the case open is not pleasant.

I'm off to play some PUBG to see how it does with that.

There were some weird artefacts at times and the game crashed just as I had gotten geared up :(

I have had crashes before, so not sure if the two are related...

Off to play some more to find out.
