ASUS X99-E WS

Really not happy

well I built the new rig today/yesterday and after going through all the usual testing etc the rig worked fine first time!

Then came the BIOS update...................

So updated to the latest version and the wheels just fell off.

couldnt boot, BIOS crashing and hanging totally useless system.

After hours and hours of sodding about with different BIOS versions (thank God for flashback!) I just noticed that the CPU Mhz were at 4484 by default. ermmm 5930K Should be 3500 right!

So tried for a few more hours to get the stock CPU speed without any success at all. EPU, TPU and XMP were all off as everything is in its "default" settings. in utter desperation I moved the TPU switch to the "I" position from "0" and the system started up fine?!?

I can get my head around this. The TPU was defiantly off as the switch has an integrated LED so its kinda obvious. if I then turn it back off the CPU speed goes back up to 4484.

weird or what.... any idea's peeps?

Very strange indeed, what BIOS version was you using? I had used 0606 with no problems. Something that I did have issues with was that I couldn't get anything stable at first. After sleeping on it and redoing the system I found that although manual reminds you that you have to plug in the EATX12V or the system wont boot it doesn't state that you need BOTH that and the EATX12V1 to get anything remotely stable. Once I had sorted that I started to get a lot more success in overclocking. Also Do be aware that on the newer boards the TPU switch has 2 positions.

Really strange, but if it seems that TPU is on when switched off and vice versa, could it be a simple rev a 'feature' of the switch vein the wrong way round? Wouldn't have the electronics knowledge to explain why the led works in the right way through...

I knwo its messed up isnt it. the bios is 0606. the board shipped with the first release so thats why I automaticaly updated it. The CPU was running at 3.54 with the release BIOS and then 4.48 afterwards.

the odd thing is that the case sides where on and that swhy I am 100% sure I didnt touch the TPM switch during this process and I falshed back to the realse BIOS to be sure. Damn odd

Nice, what is the rest of your system like and any overclocking results yet?

not much, found my Fps hardly moves when overclocking.

but had these are dirty overclocks (left voltage on Auto)
4.0ghz @ 1.176
4.5ghz @ 1.260

both were stable for 15 hours of gaming. (BF4)

been running 4.0ghz for a while now :)

Has anyone bought one of these boards in the last week or so and received the new revision with on-board USB 3.1 support?

I am waiting for a shipment of these to come after the weekend so I should know then.

EDIT... Looking at the Asus website there are other versions available with USB3.1 but not the X99-E WS. I have also not heard from Asus about a revision... That said they have been useless lately. :(

erm..... whoaa.... are GFX cards the only things that plug into PCIe now? I think not.

And on top of that you can populate all of the slots with graphics cards if they are single slot. They will only run at 8x each but they will work. Its only the coolers on the cards that most people SLI 4x with that have big coolers blocking the slots.. ;)
