ASUS XONAR D2X GETS EAX 5.0

If EAX doesn't matter to you (and I'd imagine for most people it doesn't anymore - especially as it is being used very little these days), then the Xonar would be the best option.

The Xonar has a range up to 192Khz which is amazing for a consumer card and far and above what the X-Fi can do.

Yeah, far above the...oh wait. :D

Sure, the creative media suit has loads of problems but the actual elite pro works perfectly fine as long as you use a 3rd party app instead of the lame ones they supply.

Isn't it the same, but the PCI-E version has a bridge chip?

According to the review here:

There is quite a difference between the D2 and D2X aside from the interface. Whilst the updated drivers are no doubt part of this and could possibly help the performance of the older D2, looking at a lot of those traces makes me think there's improved hardware on the D2X too.

EDIT: Not quite sure why the domain has been starred about above - is this domain banned for some reason. Sure you can work it out anyway.

I hope that is not the case. Also review sites speak mostly about the PCI-E version aka D2X and not the PCI version aka D2.
From what i remember there aren't any different components on those two card. Maybe the interface used makes the difference?!
It's really mysterious.
About the review, i am really happy that the EAX 3-5 emulation on the Xonar performs very well. Glad i purchased this card yesterday :)

could anybody with a xonar d2, d2x or any other varient please download rightmark 3d sound here: rightmark 3d sound

run the cpu utilization program and say here what it says in the right hand pane about the eax availability, fir for speaker outpus under the directx header (in the left pane), and then for XonarD2 Audio Device under the openAL header . could you also run the 3d sound programs and state here whether you can run anything newer than eax2.0 sound effects. please follow this format:

card name : (ie d2, d2x ect)
operating system :
CPU Usage Util EAX5.0 availability for dirextX:
CPU Usage Util EAX5.0 availability for OpenAL:
3d sound working for anything above eax2.0 : - [Y]/[N]

im trying to find out just what is and isnt working. thanks for the effort guys:)

Tried Prey with advanced HD EAX enabled & sound was working just had wrong speaker oreintation (front left comming from rear right kind of thing) but that has happened at times with other stuff both EAX , non EAX games & movies ... will try Bioshock COD4 Crysis but not sure which ones are meant to be EAX5 anyway

I've been watching this thread with keen interest, keep us updated I think I'm going to buy one. lol :)

Any of you using the D2X version? i.e. PCI-Express version??

Got the PCI-E D2X version today from OCUK. Been playing around with it a lot:D

The sound difference coming from an Audigy2 is astonishing. I can hear some major differences on Bioshock & Gears Of War (only games I have tried so far). Its just makes things sound more alive and clear than before.

Blurays also sound a lot better. The music is richer sounding and the bass is much cleaner. This card just gives a whole new lease of life to any media you throw at it.

Best to download the updated beta drivers from Asus and avoid the CD provided ones as if you try to install over the top it BSOD's.

Only issues I have found are that you have to contact Cyberlink to get an OEM CD-Key for PowerDVD & the SPDIF is giving me issues. I can get PCM sound for all games but when I try to play a Bluray or HD-DVD it will not let you select it under Vista and under XP it lets you do this but the sound is not right at all as every few secs you get a slight distortion noise.

what differences are you refering to? im just skimming through it now but those rmaa tests for the d2 are tosh. are there major hardware differences?

From what I gathered the only difference was the interface?

Also, those RMAA tests showing the PCI version doing poorly seem a bit iffy to me. Perhaps it's due to the card sourcing power via the motherboard (unlike the PCI-e version), and the particular motherboard/PSU they used didn't supply a stable/low ripple source of power to the card. Either way, just seems wrong...

i can personally promise you, those results for the pci version are rubbish lol. firstly asus would never have bundled rmaa with the card if it performed that badly and secondly, ive run the tests myself on my own pci version and its nowhere near as bad as that lol. infact for the most part its better than asus's own numbers.

edit: and here's some proof

EB's 16bit, 44.1khz results: http://www.elite********.com/cms/in...sk=view&id=496&Itemid=27&limit=1&limitstart=3 (i think you can work out the starred word lol)
VR-Zones results: http://sg.vr-zone.com/articles/Asus_Xonar_D2_RMAA_Results/5135-3.html

notice the noise floor is down at -125 to -130 in the VR tests, just like the d2x is on the EB tests @ 16bit44.1khz, and nice and uniform unlike the EB results for the d2 - they are all over the place.

those EB results are rubbish lol.

So both the PCI and PCI-e versions do the EAX5 (emulated :p) or just the PCI-e?
Might be tempted. My x-fi is the gamer one.

Also - just noticed, price wise its close to the prelude. Which ones better? I belive the prelude also does EAX5 and will re-sample to dolby?

thats great cozman, thank you. could you please tell me if you can use eax 5.0 effects in the rightmark 3d sound positional accuracy program? i can not with my card, i can only use eax2.0. thanks for your help:)

both are supposed to be able to do it. but hold fire until i can get some confirmation on the d2 because i cant get it working and so far nobody else has told me if they can lol. the xonar will output dolby digital or DTS for everything just like the prelude does:)
