At it like bunnies.

I agree with your answer. Though I think the attitude to sex by both men and women as changed. You seem to think I'm only blaming women. While also attacking me for blaming men.

As a society, we have a romanticised notion of how people in the past viewed sex because our history books focus almost solely on the upper classes. The truth is that regular people have been at it like rabbits since the dawn of time.

I agree. Though the way some people think of sex these days is borderline sociopathic ie, transactional and is seen as a solitary act.

The closest thing we used to have like that was one night stands. But people recognised what it was, quick sex. These days I see people talk about it as though it's some noble activity.

I wish more people would give their own answer to the question of why std's have shot up. Because it would be interesting to see how others explain it.

Completely irrelevant. You're claiming that men are traditionally promiscuous; who do you think they're banging if women aren't?
I'm claiming men think about sex more than women. This is backed up by studies that show men think of sex twice as much as women.

In order to have sex (I can only speak about hetrosexual sex. Though the acceptance of other sex is likely a factor too) needs a woman. In the past women tended to be reserved about casual sex so sex didn't happen as often.

These days women see sex in a different way, more similar to men, so more sex is happening.

I'm stating the obvious that more people are having sex because of the change in how society thinks about sex today than it did even just 30 years ago.

Just to throw something else into the mix... Whilst it's obviously completely normal for both men and women to have sex, wasn't there a few studies done that showed that having higher numbers of sexual partners made it more difficult for that person to hold a stable relationship? I swear I remember something of the sort, or maybe I made it up. I'd have a search but I'm at work. :p

Ever considered why that might be the case?

Hint : it's not the faithless heathens that are doing all the ****ing.
Not only that, look at the sexual aspects of certain religions, Mormons have some proper messed up stuff, Catholic church has all those scandals, and generally the more hardcore religions still view women as lesser, or indeed objects.

I see Bowdon is doing his usual moral panic routine :D

Interestingly on a couple of studies/articles (based in the USA) I've just been reading, it seems sexual encounters in "the youth of today" are actually lower than that of previous generations - which seems to be loosely corroborated by the OP's post that the rise in STI's is driven by us older generations lol

Anyway, a good correlation as to why the younger generations are having less "casual" sex....because they drink less alcohol, and we all know there's a direct correlation between those two! :p

Since around 2000, college students have stopped dating. Instead, they connect using apps and “hook up,” which sometimes involves sex. (Dating in the 21st century has morphed into "hookups," which ironically look a lot like dating.)

Most students hook up just a few times a year, and only a minority of hookups involve genital sex.

Compared with their parents and grandparents, this generation of young adults is significantly less sexual and considerably more likely to be celibate.

I agree that porn and modern porn and the ease of access has created a different mindset that probably isn't healthy.

However promiscuity has always been around - and that's the reason STI/Ds go up and down - society is cyclical, and new generations and things happening. It's always been that way.

If it's like the young lads at my gym they're all too zonked on weed to get up to anything.

IIRC the villages (retirement places in Florida) are well known for basically having one of the highest instances of STI's in America.

It turns out Granny still likes it, and may be putting out to more than just the milkman :p
It is why they go to the supermarket so often. :p
