At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

As soon as Cyberpunk ran well they kept patching it via Nvidia sponsorship to make your high end rig feel inadequate. Well played as always Nvidia.

They did it with Phantom Liberty. My RTX3060TI with a Ryzen 7 5700X could run some RT settings in the main game and it was playable. With a faster Ryzen 7 7800X3D and faster SSDs,the performance tanks even more with RT with the new "updates" to the game.

I completed it @CAT-THE-FIFTH after the modders enabled AMD's FG which made it run insanely well on my ampere card. I didn't have PL though but the patches rolling in may have done that, surprised nobody called this out.

The problem is the base framerate and 1% lows means the FG mod can't work miracles. The game seems to be running worse and worse on older cards. It doesn't even look significantly better than it was before IMHO.

The only way to fix it,is to switch off all RT.

Yeah I settled on some settings with a few ray traced options and got high enough fps to enjoy the game and finish. I know they overhauled the perks and PL kicked in but it never crossed my mind it could be a way to gimp as generally patches tend to improve the performance.

£400 about my max, got the money to go higher but cant justify going higher than that. As long as people are buying 2k+ cards then price just going to keep going higher and higher.

I started saving up money in August to get a 5090, cancelled gym membership, netflix etc. I even sold my 3090 before the 50 series announcement to get better value for the used one. Now even with my £2k I can't get a card. So I guess my absolute limit is 2k.

I'll play Balatro on my laptop until we get back to reality.

Or, you could spend far less on a 9070XT for half the price, and more.

Bizarre… I get the excitement of being first in for a new card and maybe overpaying a little, but… bwuh?

Even more bizarre is that for only £70 more you can actually get a 5070ti thatis still in stock at OCUK too (edit: or at least it was for a little while, seems to have gone now)

Who are these people?

They presumably aren’t ’whales’ so I guess they are just ‘uninformed’ or (dare I say it) ‘ignorant’ purchasers…

“It’s little jimmy’s 16th, let’s get a card… oh this one is cheaper and one number less!” - something like that?

I’m kind of surprised there’s that many.

But im not sure about that, because it seems a random time for so many to have been sold in one day. It clearly is related to the latest release/the new cards coming out...which means surely people know a bit about it.

If one sold today, then your scenario may make sense.

However, this points to some sort of FOMO due to the new releases being low in supply/at gouged prices.

Yup - can’t argue with that.

… just sort of bonkers. People in this tier are presumably somewhat ‘price conscious’ so, as you infer, why make such a ‘wasteful’ purchase…?
