At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

I get what you are staying but its still seems mad to me. A watch tells the time and thats it.
It's jewellery, look up how much 'proper' designer jewellery sells for and then look up the used market for it. It doesn't become obsolete in 4-6 years and if you buy the right time piece, you'll get back as much as you paid for it in 15 years time. A 5090 will be e-waste in 7-8 years, if it still works.

Money I get from selling my old card + £300 but expect +100% performance at least. I currently have RTX 3070 so my upgrade time is not there yet.

TbH 3070 is generally fast enough for me, I play 1440p @ 75 mostly and happy to cut some details, the biggest pain is the 8gb limit (FU nvidia). Amount of vram is my prime consideration now.

Rx 9070 xt at RRP would just touch the bar but I refuse to pay a single penny over the nominal price, it's too expensive already.

Reminding myself of consoles prices (entire system with dedicated os) get me to sane levels. PC gaming is better but not 4 times better as the costs involved suggest.
I am kind of in the same boat. I have a 3070 and when the 50 series was announced I was looking at the 5070Ti as it looked a) far better than the 5070 and b) not really that much worse than the 5080 if available at MSRP (which in reality is a lie) - basically 2x the performance of my current card which for me would be a worthy upgrade.

9070XT trades blows with the 70Ti and RT isn't really that much of a concern for me - unfortunately I was travelling when they were released so wasn't able to try and snag one. I am going to try to wait for supply to get a bit better and hopefully prices to stabilise before even thinking about it. I paid £750 for my 3070 through OcUK using the forum voucher which is the most I've ever spent and I really would loathe to go more than that....I remember my EVGA 1080 was £520 :(

Expensive watches / jewellery are for people with too much money that just have to show off to everyone else how wealthy they are to make themselves feel better. I agree with you. A watches only real purpose is to tell the time and as long as it does that one thing well I don't care if it costs £10, nor do I care what anyone else thinks. I could say the same about most things in life though. :)

Was really hoping to bag a 5090 this month as i want to play AAA titles maxed ar 4k but looking like a realistic MSRP will have to wait until there is enough stock in the world , last time it was the mining issues this time it's either retail manipulation or demand is high.

Can get a scalper card for £2500 and I'm tempted as even if the prices crash looking at trends over 5 years or so im going to retain at least 30% of that outlay , not sure what my 7900xtx is worth though. Oh poo spreadsheet time again !

People miss the point with watches. it's man jewellery. Men will get fun made of them for wearing a ring other than simple wedding band .... but watches ? well the sky's the limit. A watch's purpose isn't to tell time. In the 21st century everybody has a phone that will tell the time - heck even an old dumb Nokia 3210 will tell you the time.

it's jewellery. And to each their own. One thing I would say that amongst the watch community, there are brands and styles that are worn by those that are "in the know" that will get you the nod from other watch enthusiasts that don't cost the earth. Equally there are expensive watches out there that don't look much but still cost serious money. There's more to watch enthusiasts than just the stereotypical wealthy douchebag with a £35k gold rolex bought for the sole purpose of showing off.

We'll be seeing the same song and dance for 6090s before the 5090s actually have stock again :D

I'm curious as to when people will realise having the latest & greatest graphics card (aside from the emotional feeling of having 'the best') doesn't really make their lives any different.

I've been thinking this lately, all of those who bought a 5090, 5080, or 9070XT achieved their 'goal' & undoubtably had a serotonin hit for a few days perhaps - but really, aside from making you poor, whats it achieved?

Arguably games are no different, they may play with a few more fps......but these kind of people probably had a 4090 prior so it was already playable with amazing graphics settings

But what else has it done for your life ? What in life is worth £2000-3000 - I get some people maybe so utterly addicted to gaming they perceive it as some major benefit.

And of course you'll have the people who's lives apparently DEPEND on the best possible computer hardware (but even then, if they did their jobs professionally prior to this, they still made a living so its not life and death essential) - I mean, I do actually make my living from photos & videos requiring decent processing power but I'm not delusional about it - my M1 Max Mac works absolutely fine & if there is some people out there working so much they need to complete a daily project for the entire year none stop, then you're rich enough to hire additional staff - so I dont 100% buy the excuse 'its for my business'

And I guess thats what it comes down to - people give reasons & excuses for laying out daft money but I think in reality, no one really NEEDS to, it's just an emotional choice.

I wish more people applied more logic to their buying habits, then these massive companies would have less influence and power over peoples lives.

As for me with a literal career in photo/video - if someone gave me the latest M4 Max MBP would I take it? Yeah sure why not if it's free - do I NEED it ? no, no I dont, not even for work.

I also dont need any new graphics cards either for gaming, all games run just fine with the fancy graphics on - the new cards dont have new feature sets to mine (hell some Nvidia cards have less than mine!) so whats the point?

Anyways thanks for reading! :D I'll get something new when I have a practical reason to get something new or my current tools / entertainment equipment dies off.

Footnote on the 9070XT - that card at £599 at least has a price to perf ratio, so I understand that purchasing idea more.

gpu prices passed insanity with the 3000 series but the 5000 series is something special and the good news is that there is much more to come with the 6000 series, every generation RRP is increasing by £400-£500.
