Atari ST vs Amiga

If i wanted to connect an amiga joystick to my pc could i use this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-TO-RS232-...3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:1|39:1|240:1318

instead of paying for this http://www.atariage.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=267

The second just looks the same as the top thing, only with a sticker on it that says for amiga

You definately couldn't use the first one as it has no drivers for the actual joystick. You may find some places around the net that may be able to solve that for you but I can't think of anything of the top of my head that would allow it in that way.

Loved my (dads) ST 520. I remember us sending it away to have the RAM upgraded so we could play Street Fighter II!
My dad and I bought the memory and did it ourselves. You had to manually solder each leg of each chip! Nerve racking stuff :)

ps2 pad with a £5 converter from ******s works.....and an x-arcade stick works also with no problems on winuae

wont the drivers for it be in WinUAE and MAME? ususally when you connect things like PS2 pads it works automatically.

in winuae there is a setting for game and io ports and a serial selection

edit - Why would doing it this way http://www.vilminko.net/henri/projview.php?id=19&lang=en be any different to just buying a USB - serial 9 pin adapter

Because the pins are wired differently to a standard usb to serial convertor. You could try generic gamepad drivers which may work but I doubt it.

MAME and WinUAE use the DirectX API's to grab inputs that they already know about and use them in game they don't specifically have drivers.

I had to post in this thread because:-

1: My username!
2: I read it on my AmigaOne and posting from it now (PowerPC G4 processor, 1gb ram, 500gb hdd, ATI 9700pro gfx card).

Anyone wanting to know more about the Amiga history - this is a good place to start:-

I can just about get my A1200 tower on the web but would really love to upgrade it to a PPC. Shame it's so expensive nowadays.

Awesome! I had International Karate for the ST.. it was so much fun! I loved the sound the little guys made, especially when you hit someone with a low blow ;).

that low blow i presume your talking about, crouching punch to the groin, was sampled sound effect from bruce lees enter the dragon:)

Ah, I remember spending many an hour playing Speedball and F16 on the Amiga :) For me it was the first computer that could compete with arcade games at the time. I also remember doing my A level Computer Science project on it, and the teacher being all confused because the BASIC didn't use line numbers haha

Before that I had a C16, which was a disappointment, then a Spectrum 48k that kept breaking because I forgot to turn it off before unplugging the joystick interface, and a C64, which was actually awesome. I remember upgrading from a tapedeck to a 5.25" floppy disc and being utterly amazed at the speed.

Ah, happy memories :)

ahhh good times A500 then a spiffing A1200 WOOT! (Liberation was my first A1200 game)

cant remember if it was the amiga or the c64 where the glory days of flying the F19 stealth fighter flying ultra low to avoid radar thousands of miles over enemy territory(constantly checking my visibility specturm thingy) engaging the enemy with mavericks/sidewinder missiles...landing on aircraft carriers etc

but ill say this -the-

CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF ****** HONOUR u mothers! ohhh yeah

the Amiga was cool much more hip than that ugly IBM PC computer thing that was out.....wonder what happened to that .......:D

I still remember the following well. From collecting lollypop looking things to saw blades, jetpack men in trees, jets, jeeps, tanks etc

For anyone that does know its midnight resistance - a cross between turrican and contra

Well in stoke there was actually a 'club' that met up in a working man's club every monday night attended by kids and adults. a lot of people went and there was even someone who set up a stall selling blank disks etc (Rich, who only recently got locked-up for music piracy). Any people from stoke remember that?? First at the YMCA, then mainly at Chell cricket club and then I think briefly at tuntstall (or was that a different one).

The Amiga games that I remember most were: lotus esprit turbo challenge. This is the game that made me buy a 512kb memory upgrade. Alien breed and stuntcar racer. Probably loads of others I can't think of.

Yep remember the YMCA Computer club well.

My mate took his Philips CDi down there one time!

All you could hear most of the night was loads of Boing sounds eminating from peoples Amiga's using XCopy!:D

I upgraded my A1200 with a HUGE:p 3.5" 340MB Hard Drive and used to image floppy disks straight to hard drive, that 340mb IBM Drive cost me £180 from Platinum in Hanley!

I remember a a really helpful chap with a ponytail who used to lend me his disk collection;) think his name was Chris.

I recently got my A1200 out of the cupboard and installed an old laptop hard drive and got it up and running again.

Good Days!

Hmmm, was he REALLY skinny and with glasses and greasy hair?

340mb was quite big back then. I had an 85mb later upgrading to a 172mb which seemed huge!

Anyone remember, or even play, what was to be the pinnacle of Amiga gaming, the first person shooter Breathless. I remember seeing reviews of it and screenshots that looked amazing but couldn't play it cos it required an accelerator card or something.
