ATCS cases - rose tinted glasses?

I've built and also heard plenty of machines using only 80mm fans that run quiet yet have high performance.

120mm is the only size you can get that offers good airflow with inaudable noise output, period basically.

You both missed out me saying; silence and very good performance you can only use 120mm.

Please read what I post before commenting ;).

I understand your point of view but its quite simple to achieve a silent and high performing machine using 80mm fans. My current CM200 demonstrates this perfectly.

The fan size (80mm or 120mm) doesnt matter that much imo, its the positioning of the fans in the case that does, thats why the older CM cases were so good. However a lot of the older cases designed for 80mm fans didnt have great fan positioning, my old HX08 was a right pain due to the location of the exhaust fans.

But stick a high end dual core pentium in the case and it would struggle.

120mm fans have much better CFM/DB ratings than a comparable 80mm fan. It is the main reason for the jump to 120mm.

The positioning of the fans can help, if they are cooling the temperature sensor. :p

120mm overall is much better at cooling at low noise, just compare what a silent Eclipse gets to a 201-SX2 case and it is very easy to see the difference.

I am in the process of attaching some of those funky 80mm tp 120mm fan adaptors to my ATC110 case - I plan on having one 120mm intake and 2 120mm outtakes (will still be one 80mm intake). All this without any case modification.

Couple of intakes low down at the front, one exhaust near the CPU area and one on the top of the case, trust me its all you need ;). Get cool air flowing into the case at the right position and exhausted from the right positions and you dont have a problem.

The worst thing about temps is that people get obsessive about them, e.g. the magical 50 degrees C figure for CPUs under load. Even with a Dual Core P4 (if your mad enough to run one) an 80mm fan based system can cope without any problems.

I know a 201 can cool anything, theoretically be fine with quad SLI. :p

Just you are in aggreance with me that 80mm fans have worse CFM : Db than 120mm fans generally?

I am in agreeance with you, its slightly difficult to go against the laws of physics ;).

Although again, its all swings and roundabouts, e.g. with the 201 having twin 80mm intakes your going to achieve a similar CFM:Db ratio than you can with one 120mm fan.

And in that situation the 120mm solution is cheaper. But if you have an ATCs then the cost of things really does go out of the window. :p

Cost? Since when is cost an issue in case moding and the pursuit of quietness :D.

Need to enter some mod contests to try and reclaim the money we all spend :D.
